More mappers need maths!

Not enough people appreciate the mathematical basis of so much of the world of mapping yet all maps are ultimately built out of numbers. Building an appreciation of the mathematics of mapping is a tough sell in this age of click and share but if the authors can encourage a few more to `think' about what it is they are doing and the consequences of their spatial mathematical choices then the quality of mapping will undoubtedly benefit. This is a welcome text and I'd encourage anyone who is serious about making maps to explore its contents and learn a little of why knowing some fundamentals is crucial to communicating your work. Making sensible choices over projections, classifying data and analyses are important. If you know what you're doing then you're a good way down the path to making a great map. If you don't, you're likely make some major mistakes. Take the time to appreciate the maths behind your map...this book will go a long way to helping you!

This book was a waste of my money and time

The book does only a standard rudimentary job of covering basic intro-level topics. The QR codes are a gimmick that proves cumbersome and ineffective for this type of application. If I am buying a book, I want the book itself to contain the information I am buying; I don't want the book to just be a collection of links to publicly available Internet resources that a book isn't needed as a portal to reach. Furthermore, the QR codes in the book are to be read using a mobile device, but many (most) of those links go to Internet resources that are not suitable for viewing and interaction with mobile devices. Plus, many of the pages were out-of-date or dead links, so instead of just working badly, there was some QR content that didn't work at all. This book was a waste of my money and time. I bought this book with a stipend for a GIS lecture that I gave to college students; the lesson I learned for this price was to never buy a book that uses QR codes ever again.
