An Historical View of the English Government consists of three parts, concerned with the most substantive revolutions in English government and manners: from the Saxon settlement to the Norman Conquest, from the Norman Conquest to the accession of James I, and from James I to the Glorious Revolution. Through these three phases Millar traces the development of the “great outlines of the English constitution”—the history of institutions of English liberty from Saxon antiquity to the revolution settlement of 1689. Millar demonstrates serious concern for the maintenance of liberties achieved through revolution and maintains that the manners of a commercial nation, while particularly suited to personal and political liberty, are not such as to secure liberty forever.

The historical context that An Historical View provides makes it an excellent complement to Liberty Fund’s The Glasgow Edition of the Works of Adam Smith and The History of England by David Hume.

John Millar (1735–1801) explored, through his works, the nature of English governance through a prism of the natural law tradition and Scottish philosophical history. Millar was a student of Adam Smith’s at Glasgow University and his most important immediate intellectual heir. His works provide an essential linkage to Smith.

Mark Salber Phillips is Professor of History at Carleton University in Ottawa.

Dale R. Smith completed his doctorate in history at the University of British Columbia.

Knud Haakonssen is Professor of Intellectual History and Director of the Centre for Intellectual History at the University of Sussex, England.

More mappers need maths!

Not enough people appreciate the mathematical basis of so much of the world of mapping yet all maps are ultimately built out of numbers. Building an appreciation of the mathematics of mapping is a tough sell in this age of click and share but if the authors can encourage a few more to `think' about what it is they are doing and the consequences of their spatial mathematical choices then the quality of mapping will undoubtedly benefit. This is a welcome text and I'd encourage anyone who is serious about making maps to explore its contents and learn a little of why knowing some fundamentals is crucial to communicating your work. Making sensible choices over projections, classifying data and analyses are important. If you know what you're doing then you're a good way down the path to making a great map. If you don't, you're likely make some major mistakes. Take the time to appreciate the maths behind your map...this book will go a long way to helping you!

This book was a waste of my money and time

The book does only a standard rudimentary job of covering basic intro-level topics. The QR codes are a gimmick that proves cumbersome and ineffective for this type of application. If I am buying a book, I want the book itself to contain the information I am buying; I don't want the book to just be a collection of links to publicly available Internet resources that a book isn't needed as a portal to reach. Furthermore, the QR codes in the book are to be read using a mobile device, but many (most) of those links go to Internet resources that are not suitable for viewing and interaction with mobile devices. Plus, many of the pages were out-of-date or dead links, so instead of just working badly, there was some QR content that didn't work at all. This book was a waste of my money and time. I bought this book with a stipend for a GIS lecture that I gave to college students; the lesson I learned for this price was to never buy a book that uses QR codes ever again.

Don't Mess With Texas!

This is an excellent companion to the classic study of the Red River Campaign- Red River Campaign, Politics and Cotton in the Civil war by Ludwell H. Johnson.

The book doesn't go into great details about the battles but keeps it informative and interesting. The author does an excellent job setting up the battles and defenses of the campaign. Readable maps are provided which aid understanding of the battles, routes and terrain. I especially appreciate locations and descriptions of the smaller actions. I plan to visit all sites connected to the campaign in Louisana and Arkansas.

Scholars will need to read Ludwell H. Johnson's Red River Campaign for a complete understanding of the campaign. One Damn Blunder will aid this understanding and entertain.

The Yankees found the road to Texas a hard one to travel.

A lot of knowledge in a short history

Want to learn a lot in a short period of time about one of the most under-publicized campaigns of the Civil War? Read "One Damn Blunder From Beginning to End - The Red River Campaign of 1864", by Gary D. Joiner. In this volume, Joiner combines his knowledge of the Civil War and his home of Louisiana, his talents as a cartographer, and his experience as an educator to create a very readable history of this event. Whether you are a long term Civil War buff, or just beginning your odyssey into this period of American history, or somewhere in between, you
will gain an understanding of what happened, why it happened, and, in some ways most important, why the history books devote so little print to this Union disaster.

Excellent Campaign History

This book proves that silly ideas, misunderstandings, stupidity and political expediency are not limited to our times. Mixing in a good deal of greed, a chance to capture large amounts of cotton, called white gold, can move along just about anything along. The Red River Campaign of 1864 qualifies for one of the best examples of this. The idea was to deal the CSA in the Trans-Mississippi a deathblow and drive them from northern Louisiana. 40,000 Union soldiers and 60 ships are to converge of the CSA forces at Shreveport. Lack of cooperation between the army and navy, poor communications and worse leadership resulted in a resounding defeat for the Union. The book shows that a resolute leader can succeed over odds, even if his superiors are not helpful.

This is a well-written book with maps in the right places. The author expects the reader to know nothing about the campaign and keeps us fully in the picture. This is an excellent campaign history and a good addition to your library.
