A "Must Have" Deer Hunting Book

This is a Very Good Deer Hunting book!! The title seems a little bit mis-leading for the person looking for a deer hunting "how to" book. While the author, Jim Roy, does a fantastic job describing how deer act and behave -- he then takes it to the next level and relates "How" to use this behavioral information to help improve your hunting endeavors. So to me, it's more like a great deer hunting book on how to hunt smarter and then the author ties it back to how that hunting technique relates to a deer's normal behavior. For me, this helps "justify" the author's tips and makes them seem more "sensible" based on a deer's innate programed behavior in the wild.
BOTTOM LINE: Definately get this book, you will understand deer behavior better, so your hunting success will improve. This is a A++ book.

One of the Best Ever

I have read many deer hunting books and this is one of the top 3 all-time in my opinion.

Jim Roy is about as hardcore as you can get when it comes to breaking down deer behavior. Everything from how a herd prefers to utilize a bedding area, trail systems and of course wind direction.

If you are fairly new to hunting and/or have not read extensively on the subject I promise this book will be a real eye-opener.

If you are a long time hunter and have read many books on hunting deer, I promise this book will be one of the most information packed, detailed and all around one of the best hunting books you will ever have the privilege of reading.

You are missing out if you have not yet read this book.

Changed the way I will be hunting forever!

This is by far the best book I've ever read. I didn't grow up hunting, and no one in my family hunted. I didn't even start hunting until I was 32 years old, and I'm 43 now. I have been trying to find this type of information ever since I began. You really have to check your ego at the door, and I can tell several people that left reviews were unable to do that. Jim Roy explained everything in a matter of fact way, I don't think he was bragging in any way, shape, or form. I've already read this book 2 times and have had it for 4 days. It has totally changed my perspective of deer, and the way I will approach hunting them. Thank you Mr. Roy for such a great book.

Allan T. Stein idolized his uncle, a pilot in the Great War. So in 1943, in the midst of the Second World War, he left Texas A&M University for Lackland Air Field to learn to fly. By the time he retired in 1969, Stein had flown everything from BT-13s and B-24s to B-52s and C-47s. During World War II, he flew missions over China and the Sea of Japan, and by V-J Day, he had participated in eight campaigns and logged 347 hours in combat. Stein later spent one year in Vietnam as operations officer for the 360 TEWS (Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron), which used refitted C-47s to monitor and locate Vietcong units. He ended his career as inspector general of the Civil Air Patrol. Stein remembers drinking 10¢ beers in San Antonio and running an AT-17 into a dry lake bed outside Lubbock. He recalls a B-25 crashing into a stockade and a mission over the Atlantic that almost ended tragically due to bad weather and because his flight of B-47s could not refuel properly. During the 1940s, money was always short and the future uncertain, so he and his wife lived cheaply in cramped apartments and converted garages. Yet he recalls that the camaraderie among air force personnel and their families made those the best years of their lives. Stein considers himself to have been an ordinary airman, not a hero. But he was also a seasoned pilot and a conscientious officer with a strong sense of right and wrong. After a pilot he had trained and certified died in an accident, Stein made it a practice to fail all but the best candidates. He was just as disgusted with the corruption he encountered in the Civil Air Patrol as he was with the tendentious reporters he met in Saigon’s Hotel Caravelle. Although he met his share of cowards and scoundrels, Stein loved to fly and he loved the air force. He was the sort of officer his superiors trusted not to make mistakes, but he was not the sort to rise to high rank. What he offers here is an account of a typical career as an air force officer, complete with its frustrations, moral dilemmas, and the occasional harrowing experience.

Col Stein and I shared some of the same history in the Air Force. I was assigned to the 308th Bomb Wing as a B-29 gunner until the time it was switched over to the B-47. I also rotated to Sidi Slimane AB, French Morocco with the 373rd Bomb Squadron. I transferred from the 308th to the 506th SFW, Tinker AFB, OK in 1955. Later I served with him at the Air Force Command Post (Rear) at Maxwell AFB. Very interesting from my perspective as to what others thought of the assignments. I retired in 1974 at Ft. Ritchie, Md.

Disappointing read for an enthusiastic pilot

My preference in aviation books is for sufficient detail of what historic aircraft were like to fly, and their deployment in various roles. This book is a personal memoir with virtually none of that. For example, "I flew to Seattle and returned with our first B47". That's it? What was the B47 like to fly? Is it true that excessive control deflection at low speeds would cause the structure to fail? How accurate was the movie "Strategic Air Command"? If your taste runs to "life in the USAF, and personalities I encountered", then this book may be for you, but not for me. My recent favorites are "Like Rolling Thunder" and "Palace Cobra" by Ed Rasimus, which may put my opinions in perspective.

At last -- A scientist checks in and gives us the straight story

Psychic phenomena are too numerous to be completely discounted and it has always bothered me that its association with quackery and charlatanism flies in the face of some sincere opinions and experience to the contrary. I am the greatest of sceptics and always found comfort in the absence of empirical evidence because such things frighten me. "There are things we cannot explain" is my way of answering myself and someone will find a credible explanation one day for things we don't understand in our culture but for which other cultures have elaborate ritual and explanation. Maureen Caudill treads the scientific path and is very clear about things, knowing that much of her readership will be, as I am, not necessarily too well-read in scientific jargon. Strip away fear and awe -- there is an explanation for many things and Caudill shows us how exciting this information can be and what we can teach ourselves to do. We are like expensive computers that we currently use only to play solitaire and send email. WOW!! I've been waiting for this book for a long time and I want to go further and study more. It's good, really good.

A great book

I expected some exercises in this book. There were none and that did not bother me. At the end of the book the lack of exercises is all made up for. I love how easy this book is to read. Maureen is never vague and she explains to satisfaction. She is funny and great a great story-teller. There are touching moments. I read this book straight through only breaking for sleep and eat. Reading this book is like reading several books. It's worth the full price. Maureen helped me come to some very significant realizations that are having the effect of changing my life.

In this introduction to violence and nonviolence, Gan (philosophy, Bonaventure U.) focuses on subjective and intersubjective violence and examines common myths about violence, noting logical inconsistencies as well as ways to overcome their rhetorical force. These include the idea that violence is exclusively a physical act, that there are good people and bad people (i.e. and good perpetrators of violence and bad ones), that some measured violence is always necessary to prevent greater violence, and that wrongdoers must be punished and forgo their some or all of their worth as humans in the process. The second part of the text is about thinking through nonviolence as a radical practice and comprehensive strategy in light of the 'fuller account of violence' Gans is offering. He is at odds with the idea that 'ends justify the means,' but agrees in the end with Plato that 'it is better to be injured than to injure.' (Book News, Inc.)
