The Politics of Philosophy: A Commentary on Aristotle's Politics, by Michael Davis

In the most original interpretation of Aristotle's Politics in years, Michael Davis delivers many memorable and provocative formulations of Aristotle's messages concerning the constitutive tensions of political life. He traces the uncanny parallel between politics and philosophy in Aristotle, arguing that their connection is much deeper than it is ordinarily understood to be and that, for Aristotle, understanding either requires understanding the other. Davis presents his interpretation with a striking clarity and accessibility that makes the book a pleasure to read.

Review
Michael Davis has for the first time shown how the disparate parts of Aristotle's Politics are to be understood in light of their several perplexities, and how all the parts constitute a whole that constitutes in turn political philosophy and the philosophical nature of human, i.e., political, life. (Seth Benardete, New York University)

In this compact and deeply profound reading of Aristotle's Politics, Davis explains in a new and intriguing way why the city is thought to be natural to man. An exceptional book, filled with exciting arguments and amazing insights. (CHOICE)

This landmark interpretation . . . is an important work that will endure. (Joseph Cropsey, University of Chicago)

Full of surprising insights and memorable formulations. (Stephen Salkever, Bryn Mawr College)

A truly remarkable book. It is a delight to read. (Mary Nichols, Fordham University)

Compact and deeply profound reading . . . exceptional book, filled with exacting arguments and amazing insights. (Social and Behavioral Science)

About the Author
Michael Davis is professor of philosophy at Sarah Lawrence College and is the author of "Aristotle's Poetics: The Poetry of Philosophy" (Rowman & Littlefield, 1992).

a godsend
By Mark Twain
My impression cannot possibly amount to much, as this is the only secondary source which constitutes a bonafide book that I have actually read on Aristotle's Politics, but still--Davis' analysis is simply spectacular. To keep it simple, though, let me just say that the formal structure Davis brings to light is alone worth the price of admission.

Making Multiculturalism: Boundaries and Meaning in U.S. English Departments, by Bethany Bryson

Multiculturalism was a hot issue on college campuses in the 1990s, and it was a confusing issue, especially for English professors. Making Multiculturalism ventures into four college English departments to explore how professors made sense of multiculturalism. Their answers provide important insights into the "canon wars," multiculturalism, and cultural change.

Defining meaning as a system of boundaries, Bryson uncovers specific mechanisms through which social institutions preserve themselves by imposing old meanings on new ideas. She connects those insights to some of today's most difficult cultural policy challenges, including campus (or workplace) diversity, individual responsibility, and the policy pitfalls of defining culture as something separate from social life. Bryson contends that cultural policy should abandon the "norms and values" definition of culture as individual beliefs and focus instead on the cultural implications of structure.

Review
"...Bryson's book is an incisive and provocative account of multiculturalism in action, told in a style that never strains for academic pomposity. In an important way, hers is a telltale reminder that multiculturalism, when it remains as empty talk, can easily become a cover for the deeper structural problems that reproduce social inequality."—American Journal of Sociology

"Bethany Bryson steps into the heart of the multiculturalism battle. She offers a compelling book that directly challenges some of the common ideas, arguments, and conclusions about culture, cultural change, and higher education that have become dominant themes in the 'culture wars.'" —Alford A. Young, Jr., University of Michigan

"Bethany Bryson makes an extremely interesting and unusual intervention in what has to-date been a debate conducted in the abstract terms of cultural criticism. Making Multiculturalism will be influential and, in the best sense of the word, controversial." —Elizabeth Long, Rice University

Introductory Lectures on Aesthetics, by Georg W. F. Hegel

Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, a late 18th and early 19th century German philosopher, was one of the foremost thinkers of German Idealism. His historicist and idealist account of reality revolutionized European philosophy and was an important precursor to Continental philosophy and Marxism. He created a framework known as Absolute Idealism that was able to account for the relation of the mind, nature, art, the state, and history. Ultimately, he believed that the mind was comprised of several contradictory but unified ideas that did not cancel each other out or reduce each other's importance. According to Hegel, art revealed the fundamental nature of existence, but he felt that art and its significance were in decline. He wrote that art gives a physical and sensory depiction of the Absolute; it offers an effortless combination of form and content while giving viewers the ability to see the world in a form that doesn't actually exist. Hegel's "Introductory Lectures on Aesthetics," divides his most basic ideas on art into five chapters with multiple parts outlining his complex, but revolutionary, mindset and opinions. Like many philosophers, Hegel's words are written with other philosophers in mind; the arguments and counterarguments are in relation to the other philosophical theories of the time. Anyone interested in art history or philosophy will find this work highly informative.

Engaging Students through Inquiry-Oriented Learning and Technology offers teachers both the theoretical underpinnings of inquiry learning as well as practical takeaways of activities that can be put to immediate use in the classroommmm (Dave Mirra, chief technology officer, Stafford County Public Schools, Stafford, VA)

Engaging Students through Inquiry-Oriented Learning and Technology is easy to read and follow, even if you are not a teacher. One of the most important things I learned was to be a guide and to not set too many limits for the students. (Ashley M. DeBord, preservice teacher and graduate education student)

Web inquiry allows students to take charge in their assignment and is more focused on them finding information online than having the teacher post Web sites for the students to use. These activities make students think and will keep them focused on finding answers that they need. I have to make my hook interesting in order to keep my students motivated and interested in the topic. (Brian Southerland, preservice teacher and graduate education student)

What a great resource! Coffman makes the reading easy to understand but gives plenty of information and detail; her knowledge of the subject matter comes through without impeding the reader with many technical terms. What I thought about when I read Engaging Students through Inquiry-Oriented Learning and Technology is how little I really understood about Web-based inquiry. This text gives me some innovative ideas for my own web-based activity. (Jeanne Bergeron, math teacher and graduate student in education)

Wow! After reading Engaging Students through Inquiry-Oriented Learning and Technology, I have a much better understanding of a Web inquiry activity. When designing and developing my web-based lessons, I will remember to keep the ideas interesting. I want to hook students and get them actively involved in their learning. The more my lesson intrigues students, the better their learning and development of ideas because they are truly interested and want to learn more. When students analyze and synthesize their own ideas, they don't get the ideas of a filtered textbook; instead they create meaning from what they are discovering. In the web-based inquiry activity, my job is to assist students and be their support when they have problems not guide their every single movement. (Stephanie Iero, preservice teacher and graduate student in education)

Textbooks provide a good solid source to use in the classroom, but too many teachers use them as their only source. Why would you not use the Web when it has so much valuable information right at your students' fingertips? Engaging Students through Inquiry-Oriented Learning and Technology really helped me to understand all the good things that come with using technology in the classroom. (Kelley A. Dent, preservice teacher and graduate student in education)

This book serves as an excellent primer for teachers on the value of inquiry learning as a teaching modality. Engaging Students through Inquiry-Oriented Learning and Technology offers teachers both the theoretical underpinnings of inquiry learning as well as practical takeaways of activities that can be put to immediate use in the classroom (Dave Mirra, chief technology officer, Stafford County Public Schools, Stafford, VA)

The inquiry-oriented activities discussed in Coffman's book allow students to be active and engaged in their own learning. This approach to educating twenty-first century learners is exactly what students need to be competitive in this global marketplace! The use of WebQuests, Web-based inquiry, and telecollaborative activities provides students with the hands-on learning they need to be twenty-first century citizens. Students in today's classroom not only need to be engaged, motivated, and interested in learning; they also need to apply their knowledge to the world they live in. . . . I would highly recommend this book to any practicing teacher who wants to do more in the classroom than just lecture and who sees the benefit of real-world application to stimulate theoretical, textbook learning. Assassination and Commemoration: JFK, Dallas, and The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza, by Stephen Fagin

The shots that killed President John F. Kennedy in November 1963 were fired from the sixth floor of a nondescript warehouse at the edge of Dealey Plaza in downtown Dallas. That floor in the Texas School Book Depository became a museum exhibit in 1989 and was designated part of a National Historic Landmark District in 1993. This book recounts the slow and painful process by which a city and a nation came to terms with its collective memory of the assassination and its aftermath.

Stephen Fagin begins Assassination and Commemoration by retracing the events that culminated in Lee Harvey Oswald’s shots at the presidential motorcade. He vividly describes the volatile political climate of midcentury Dallas as well as the shame that haunted the city for decades after the assassination. The book highlights the decades-long work of people determined to create a museum that commemorates a president and recalls the drama and heartbreak of November 22, 1963. Fagin narrates the painstaking day-to-day work of cultivating the support of influential citizens and convincing boards and committees of the importance of preservation and interpretation.

Today, The Sixth Floor Museum helps visitors to interpret the depository and Dealey Plaza as sacred ground and a monument to an unforgettable American tragedy. One of the most popular historic sites in Texas, it is a place of quiet reflection, of edification for older Americans who remember the Kennedy years, and of education for the large and growing number of younger visitors unfamiliar with the events the museum commemorates. Like the museum itself, Fagin’s book both carefully studies a community’s confrontation with tragedy and explores the ways we preserve the past.

From Publishers Weekly
Half a century after J.F.K. was assassinated in Dealey Plaza, the city of Dallas still struggles with being branded as having some responsibility. The evolution of the city's responses to this sentiment is well-documented in this interesting, if somewhat dry, account of the path from the fatal shots to the creation of a museum on the sixth floor of the Texas School Book Depository, which Lee Harvey Oswald ostensibly used as his sniper's nest. Fagin begins by describing the poisonous atmosphere in the right-wing-leaning city even before the fatal day, before detailing radically different plans for the building. Many wanted it torn down, while others thought that it would make the perfect location for a living memorial that honored the president's life, while focusing on his murder—a view that eventually prevailed. Fagin makes the case that the museum's value only increases as more and more of those who remember where they were when they heard the sad news pass away every year. While some of the author's observations are a bit overblown, this stands as a useful study of a city's response to trauma. 16 b&w and 35 color illus. (July)

A Must-Read For D/FW JFK Buffs
By Brian K. Burns
The Sixth Floor Museum was born out of 25 years of fits and starts, the tireless efforts of two ladies in particular, and the flip of a political coin that had "demolition" engraved on one side, "preservation" on the other. This book was Fagin's college thesis, all the more remarkable for the historical gap it fills for Dallas - a "city with no history". And it is only fitting that the author should have found his career in the role of Associate Curator for the museum.

When The Southern Rock Island Plow Company rebuilt its Dallas headquarters in 1901 (the previous 5-story building had been struck by lightning during tornado season 3 years earlier and burned to the ground), a celebratory dance was held inside the new 7-story building. This new structure would endure several incarnations - as The Sexton Wholesale Grocery Company, The Perfection-Aire Air Conditioning Company, The Texas School Book Depository, and luckily for historians, The Sixth Floor Museum.

"Assassination and Commemoration" tells not only the complete story of the Sixth Floor Museum, but of the tumultuous politico-social history of Dallas. When I started researching the JFK assassination, I immediately recognized the need for a book such as Stephen Fagin's, so it was especially rewarding to discover that such a book had been written - and well-written at that. If you are an inquisitive Dallasite, an armchair historian, a JFK buff, or any of the above, this is an excellent read and a highly useful reference.

What a WONDERFUL Piece of Historical Research.
By Brent P. Lyons
First, the text of this book, is well written and has a good flow through the entire timeline account, especially right after the assassination until the present time. It is a very easy and good read, and really never boring.

The author also gets to the point. This book really never gets into details about the assassination. It first gets into the political climate of what Dallas, Texas was in the late 50's and into the early 60's, until the assassination. Then what does the city want to do about the Texas School Book Depository building? The reader will find out what happens to it during the late 60's, through the 70's and into the 80's. There were many prominent people in the city of Dallas, that was divided about the fate of the Texas School Book Depository. When the Sixth Floor Exhibit finally opened up in February of 1989, the reader will find out how wonderfully it developed through the next two decades and until the present time.

I like this book very much!!! I also believe that it will stand the test of time, meaning if the Sixth Floor Museum was never created, it would of been a BIG hole for whoever wants to study the Kennedy Assassination, and other events that happend to the city of Dallas.

Excellent history of the formation of The Sixth Floor Muesum at Dealey Plaza
By Jeremy Lyon
When you hear the name "Dallas" what is the first thing you think of?

Do you think of the Cowboys football team? J.R. Ewing? For many of a certain generation the most compelling legacy of this city is the one they would most like it to live down. It's hard to overcome the stigma of a presidential murder. And what do you do when the most infamous landmark of that event, the personification of everything that went wrong that day, attracts tens of thousands of visitors from around the world to your city only to heighten that sense of responsibility?

"Assassination and Commemoration" examines the inevitable conflicts that surrounded the decision to preserve the site of President John F. Kennedy's assassination, and how a few markedly tenacious and astute civic leaders saw the opportunity to transform the historic School Book Depository building from a site of shame into a site of learning and acceptance. The author takes us through a very tumultuous time for Dallas and its citizens. He introduces us to not only the rich and powerful statesmen and businessmen of the time, but also to the common citizen and the spectrum of politics and personal traumas that influenced their varied opinions of Dallas and the legacy they believed it should embrace.

Many will approach this book solely for its historical and political value. However, the value of the deeply personal nature of this subject should not be overlooked. Creating an internationally renowned museum on the site of a tragedy is no easy task. In the book we learn how everyone involved in the project brought their own unique motivations and personalities to the table. Many people judged Dallas without giving thought to the deep remorse felt by its population. Many again judged Dallas' decision to open an educational exhibit in the former School Book Depository building without heeding what they might accomplish. "Assassination and Commemoration" shows us how, with a half-century behind us, we can now truly appreciate what those civic minded few managed to give to the city, the nation, and the world - closure for those who lived through it, and enlightenment for future generations.

It is clear that this is a subject of profound worth for the author and it shows through his writing. He gives us insight through the personal stories and struggles of the individuals responsible for bringing about a heartfelt and tasteful realization of their objective - to transform a building long considered an eyesore into a leading venue for education and outreach. His personal approach in recording for posterity the stories of a troubled time will no doubt help to inform the generations.

Digital Design: A Critical Introduction, by Dean Bruton, Antony Radford

Digital Design: A Critical Introduction provides a much-needed new perspective on designing with digital media. Linking ideas from media theory, generative design and creativity with examples from nature, art, architecture, industrial design, websites, animation and games, it addresses some fundamental questions about creative design with digital media.

Featuring original material based on the authors' own research, the book argues that the recognition and understanding of the interplay of the two apparently opposing concepts of rules and contingency supports original thinking, creativity and innovation.

Going beyond existing texts on the subject, Digital Design is an accessible primer whose innovative approach transcends the analysis of individual subfields - such as animation, games and website design - yet offers practical help within all of them.

Review
Emphasising a maker's perspective on digital design - the nodes, networks, and the capacity for participation and evolution that digital media affords us - and maintaining a consistent conceptual position, this book makes the case for a generic approach to digital design. Karen Cham, Kingston University, UK As an artist myself I found the book very stimulating. The authors draw interesting connections between multiple topics.
