About the Author

Feeling most at home behind a pulpit, Will Willimon’s deepest calling is to be a preacher and truth-teller of Jesus Christ. He is Professor of the Practice of Christian Ministry at Duke University Divinity School and retired Bishop of the North Alabama Conference of The United Methodist Church, after serving for 20 years as faculty member and Dean of the Chapel at Duke University. He lives in Durham, North Carolina.

Will Willimon has published many books, including his preaching subscription service on MinistryMatters.com, Pulpit Resource, and Fear of the Other: No Fear in Love, both published by Abingdon Press.

Incarnation: The surprise

Dr. Willimon writes in a spare yet direct fashion about the incarnation and its implications for all followers of Jesus the Christ. I found myself wanting to underline practically every sentence in each chapter. I've not yet finished the book; however, I've already found some Willimon morsels. For example, on p. 43, "Incarnation is not only about the birth of a baby at Bethlehem but also about the brutal crucifixion of an innocent man on Golgotha." On p. 54, "Because of the Incarnation,we've got to love the world now, in the spirit of Christ love the world we've got, because the Incarnation proves that God has got the world." I heartily recommend this wonderful little book because I'm confident that the serious reader will be driven further into the scriptures to understand better why he/she believes.

"Every moment is sacred"

I have enjoyed Bishop Willimon's elucidation of the doctrine of Incarnation. It is a rather meditative book, though. I would advise taking a contemplative pace to get the most from it.

About the Author
Morris West was born in Melbourne in 1916. He was a member of the Christian Brothers but left the order after 12 years. Around the time of the publication of his first novel in 1945, he worked in Melbourne radio but left Australia in 1955 to further his career as a writer. During his time away from Australia he lived in Austria, Italy, England and the USA. He returned to Australia in 1980. He wrote over thirty novels, many plays and several of his novels were adapted for film. Morris West died in 1999, while working at his desk.

Luca Rossi, un cardenal con muchas cicatrices en su cuerpo y en su alma tienes tres grandes preocupaciones: la muerte del Papa, la llegada de Isabel a Roma y el diario del difunto Vicario de Cristo en manos de la prensa. Durante el período de luto, cuando el Vaticano se prepara para el cónclave, Luca a de enfrentarse a las intrigas palaciegas, al escrutinio e intromisión de la prensa en su vida pública y privada, al reencuetro con su viejo amor que abre viejas heridas y ha de echar mano a sus habilidades diplomáticas y a su sangre fría para soportar el acoso, a las presiones a que es sometido y a sus problemas de conciencia. Las cartas para el cónclave comienzan a ser barajadas, el como papabile ha de participar, la decisión es solo suya.
Novela muy bien escrita donde el autor recreando el período previo a la elección de un Papa mezcla una historia de amor, una denuncia al silencio de la iglesia contra los regímenes totalitarios y la violencia de sus gobiernos, un poco de intriga palaciega y temas delicados de la política vaticana creando una trama entretenida. Muy interesante como el escritor profetizó con más de quince años de antelación la llegada de un argentino al Trono de San Pedro - Francisco y jesuita para más inri.

He argues that Manchukuo, as a transparently constructed 'nation-state,' offers a unique historical laboratory for examining the utilization and transformation of circulating global forces mediated by the 'East Asian modern.' Sovereignty and AUthenticity not only shows how Manchukuo drew technologies of modern nationbuilding from China and Japan, but it provides a window into how some of these techniques and processes were obscured or naturalized in the more successful East Asian nation-states. With its sweepingly original theoretical and comparative perspectives on nationalism and imperialism, this book will be essential reading for all those interested in contemporary history.

Impenetrably dense

I think most people will buy this book because they are assigned it for class, but if you happen to have an independent thirst for knowledge about the Japanese puppet state Manchukuo and its related international issues, avoid this book at all costs. It's an impenetrable thicket of big thorny paragraphs, swamps of sentences, academic buzzwords, crickets, etc. that rarely discusses any facts about Manchukuo. If you really *must* read it get it through interlibrary loan-- it's not a book you will want to look at twice.
