The book reveals a good in depth knowledge of the thought of the late scholastics coupled with a good understanding of economics (without which the economic thought of these past thinkers would not make sense). Hence a very informative book. Perheaps the author could have liaised a bit more with the current economic thoughts. A recommended reading for those who think present economic issues comes only from the modern economic developpement. Proves also that, to discuss of the moral issues raised by economics one must have (as the late scholastics tried to attain in their time - contrary many of our todays moral thinker who despise economics) a good understanding of economic processes.

The foremost Rebel spearhead on that second day of the battle was Barksdale’s Mississippi brigade, which launched what one (Union) observer called the "grandest charge that was ever seen by mortal man.”

Barksdale’s brigade was already renowned in the Army of Northern Virginia for its stand-alone fights at Fredericksburg. On the second day of Gettysburg it was just champing at the bit to go in. The Federal left was not as vulnerable as Lee had envisioned, but had cooperated with Rebel wishes by extending its Third Corps into a salient. Hood’s crack division was launched first, seizing Devil’s Den, climbing Little Round Top, and hammering in the wheatfield.

Then Longstreet began to launch McLaws’ division, and finally gave Barksdale the go-ahead. The Mississippians, with their white-haired commander on horseback at their head, utterly crushed the peach orchard salient and continued marauding up to Cemetery Ridge. Hancock, Meade, and other Union generals desperately struggled to find units to stem the Rebel tide. One of Barksdale’s regiments, the 21st Mississippi, veered off from the brigade in the chaos, rampaging across the field, overrunning Union battery after battery. The collapsing Federals had to gather men from four different corps to try to stem the onslaught.

Barksdale himself was killed at the apex of his advance. Darkness, as well as Confederate exhaustion, finally ended the day’s fight as the shaken, depleted Federal units on their heights took stock. They had barely held on against the full ferocity of the Rebels, on a day that decided the fate of the nation. Barksdale’s Charge describes the exact moment when the Confederacy reached its zenith, and the soldiers of the Northern states just barely succeeded in retaining their perfect Union.

Barksdale’s Charge tells a tale of immense valor at the brigade level frustrated by the ill-coordinated tactical decisions of division and corps commanders: “while the army’s commander and his top lieutenant had been badly outgeneraled on July 2, the Mississippi Brigade had not been out-fought by any unit on either side” (244). Hood wrote after the war, “Thus it was that the 21st Mississippi Regiment bore the Stars and Bars to the very farthest point reached in the enemy’s line on the bloody field of Gettysburg” (243). Meade wrote in his after-battle report that “Sickles’ unauthorized advance to the Peach Orchard was ‘an error which nearly proved fatal in the battle’” (259). Bannon won the Douglas Southall Freeman Award for the best book in Southern history. For more than two decades, Dr. Tucker has been a military historian for the U.S. Air Force. Little known story of Gettysburg's crucial second day

Tucker's plausible thesis is that Brig.-Gen. William Barksdale's charge on July 2 was potentially more significant than the much better known one under Pickett the next day, which never had a realistic chance of success. The average person with some awareness of the Civil War associates July 2 with Little Round Top, to which Tucker pays little attention - this may be the only book about the second day of Gettysburg which doesn't mention Col. Joshua Chamberlain, and some readers may find the author's perspective too much from the Confederate side. He does mention the other famous Union action that day, Maj.-Gen. Dan Sickles' advance without orders to the peach orchard. It was Barksdale's brigade that proceeded to cut through Sickles' corps and almost reached Cemetery Ridge - although without infantry support it's not clear what it could have accomplished there. While Tucker's tale is told largely from the Confederate viewpoint, it is not a mythological one. He is unsparing in criticism of almost the whole rebel high command, from Gen. Robert E. Lee on down. Much of this fascinating history will be unfamiliar to the average reader. For example, Barksdale's charge was finally stopped by a Union counter-charge of a brigade which had surrendered at Harper's Ferry and was out to redeem itself, led by Col. George Willard under orders from Maj.-Gen. Winfield Scott Hancock. Both Willard and Barksdale were killed in this climactic encounter. In an equally interesting sidebar, one of Barksdale's regiments, led by Col. Benjamin Humphreys (later an unreconstructed governor of Mississippi), separated from the rest of the brigade and did great damage on its own. It was driven off by a charge from Willard's reserve regiment, the Garibaldi Guards of New York. They were almost entirely immigrants under a Prussian commander, Maj. Hugo Hildebrandt. Such are the extraordinary true stories that come to life in a good detailed study, like this one, of Civil War history.

Resurrection Power

When I started reading the book, my impression was that it was like a manual for the pastors who were to be under the covering of Pastor Maldonado. I wondered if it was for me, but I kept reading...and was happy that I did. I have had the baptism in the Holy Ghost for many years but I had never even thought about our having the Resurrection Power like Maldonado teaches. My whole thinking now has changed. It is opening up a whole new way of thinking and approaching healing and Creative Miracles. I highly recommend this book. It is bleeding yellow highliter from all the notes. I judge a book by how many notes I take. If you are happy thinking you just want to make into heaven by the skin of your teeth or have a little cabin in the corner of Gloryland...then this book isn't for you. But if you truly want to do as Jesus commanded...and that is to spread the Gospel to the far reaches of the Earth, get this book. The Resurrection Power is the only way to bring the Kingdom of God here as it is in heaven.

The Kingdom of Power is an EXCELLENT training manual for understanding the Kingdom of God as God intended it to be preached and understood and more importantly, the confirmation thereof with signs, wonders, and miracles. It is a practical guide to a spiritual subject that the Body of Christ desperately needs to understand. And not only does it present biblically sound theory, but it is chocked full of firsthand accounts of miracles that have happened as people around the world have have had their own encounters with the Kingdom of Power! We ordered this book after watching the videos from EO tours in preparing for our trip to the Holy Land. We have also read several other books about Holy Land Tours. ThIs book is the best for our purposes. It is very informative. It is small, so its easisly packed for the plane and on the bus as we tour.

This book is an excellent resource for travelers or students.

My wife and I just completed a two-week pilgrimage to the Holy Land with Dr. Luker as the tour leader and subject matter expert. Although not required, we used this book as the source of information to familiarize ourselves with each area to be visited before doing so. The material contained in the book was invaluable in preparing us to be able to maximize our learning experience as we visited each site. I would highly recommend it.

For people touring Israel, or just wanting information about various Biblical sites, this is a very helpful resource. Because it is designed to be carried in a pocket or a day-bag, the print is rather small. The information in this little jewel is very accurate and highly informative.

Until now, Union army colonel Nathan W. Daniels has been a forgotten man with a forgotten regiment. The white commanding officer of the 2nd Louisiana Native Guard Volunteers, a black regiment, he was removed with his men from mainland military activity and confined to obscure duty on Ship Island, ten miles off the coast of Mississippi. However, as Daniels' intriguing diary documents, despite an unrenowned existence that has earned them little attention from historians, the 2nd Native Guards represent a pioneering stage in the history of black troops at war.

The story of the Louisiana Native Guards is essentially the story of the first black commissioned officers in the Civil War. Ordered by General Benjamin F. Butler, the promotion of seventy-six educated, free blacks was an experimental step taken during the early days of black enlistment. However, within one year, nearly all the officers, including their white colonels, were forced out or had resigned in frustration.

Daniels lived the tale of these removals and confided his thoughts to his diary, a rare surviving narrative from someone of his rank and position. Woven through daily entries of routine life on the military post are his comments about his responsibilities and frustrations of being caught between the black and white military worlds of the day. He vividly recalls a fierce skirmish on the mainland at East Pascagoula, Mississippi, in which his black troops, having fought superbly, suffered most of their casualties from apparently intentional "friendly" fire from the Union gunboat Jackson, sent there to protect them.

In May, 1863, Daniels was arrested in New Orleans on seemingly trifling charges related to his duty on Ship Island. He continued his diary in the Federally occupied city, giving fascinating details of life there and chronicling his slow torture in the machinery of the military bureaucracy. He eventually separated from the army under circumstances that remain curious.

The diary also provides never-before-published pictures from wartime Ship Island, including photographs of members of Daniels' regiment, visiting ship captains, and Major Francis E. Dumas -- the highest-ranking black officer to see combat during the war. A superb resource in and of themselves, these photographs will fascinate Civil War enthusiasts.

The first published personal narrative by a regimental commander of free black troops, Thank God My Regiment an African One offers a unique glimpse into the daily lives of white leaders of the earliest black soldiers. It is a significant contribution to the ongoing documentation of the experience of black troops in the Civil War.

A welcome addition to CW sources. Weaver does an excellent job filling in the background and the epilogue. The actual diary takes up less than half the pages, but they are intriguing nonetheless. Daniels is a true hero toiling in the heat and humidity of the Gulf Coast against the prejudice of other Union officers and soldiers. He can be inspiring at times.

A much needed history

I have been researching Louisiana and the Native Corps for anything on Major Francis Dumas. He is on cover of book with Mr. Daniels. I like that the author included alot of backround info on Daniels and the people he wrote about in his diary. It is great to hear actual words about how well the Black Troops fought in the Civil War. A much needed history.

About the Author
J. MICHAEL STRACZYNSKI is a writer and television producer who has worked in a variety of media, including comics, novels, TV, film, and radio dramas.  He is perhaps most known as the creator and showrunner of the Babylon 5 TV series, and its spin-off Crusade. He was also the creator of Jeremiah for Showtime. Straczynski has written numerous film scripts, including Changeling starring Angelina Jolie, which was nominated for a BAFTA Award for Best Original Screenplay. His comics work includes Rising Stars for Top Cow/Image, The Amazing Spider-Man, Supreme Power, and Thor for Marvel, and now SUPERMAN and WONDER WOMAN for DC Comics. He is also the author of the SUPERMAN: EARTH ONE graphic novel.

Wonderful Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman: Odyssey Vol. 2 picks up right where the previous volume left off. Wonder Woman (Diana) is left on the defense against a powerful force who has obliterated her warrior sisters and left her memories of who she is and was shattered. The first volume, however, seemed a bit too confusing and lackluster. This volume picks up the slack as Diana begins putting the pieces together as to why she is in this predicament and how it came to be.

Writers J. Michael Straczynski and Phil Hester give more to the story than in the previous volume. The pacing of character development, action, and plot is more balanced here. There are some great twists and turns as Diana gets help from old foes in order to help restore who she is. Diana is really a strong hero here and she really gets put to the test in her last adventure in the old DCU.

The artwork is solid. The highlights are Alex Garner's variant cover gallery at the back of the book. Sweet! The last issue felt a little rushed on the artwork, as I guess things were being rushed in preparation for the change coming. And I like Don Kramer, but on medium shots or close ups on faces, I tend to feel he uses the same facial structure for every human character. It's a little creepy to have a battle hardened and beautiful Diana glaring us down and then ten pages later almost that same face is used only a receding hairline and goatee are slapped on and it's a sneering Dr. Psycho. Uggghhh.

The sad thing about this story arc is that it was done to give Wonder Woman a reboot but then after this 15 issue run Wonder Woman is rebooted again. That is the nature of the comic business but it is kind of a downer that Diana struggled so hard for this continuity just to have have it stripped away again. In the end (minor spoiler, although one should know good usually triumphs evil) after Diana has won and is enjoying a peaceful moment she mentions that she feels a change is coming. Foreshadowing of Flashpoint? Maybe.

LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!

So here it is.. confession time! I am a 44 year old woman and have never really purchased comic books; however, I remember watching the Wonder Woman series on t.v back in the late 70's. I recently took my 9 year old son to a local comic book store as he was looking for a comic when I came across Wonder Woman Odyssey Volume 1. I was feeling nostalgic so I bought it! It was incredible and so much different from the Wonder Woman I remembered. I asked the store if they had Volume 2 after I was finished with Volume 1 but they did not. Imagine my excitement when I found it on Amazon (and for soooo much less than I purchased the first one locally!) Anyway, I bought it and read it in just a few hours. IT WAS GREAT! I LOVE IT!! I really can't say anything else. :-)

I really enjoyed Starczynski’s updated take on Wonder Woman in the first volume of Odyssey. So, I was somewhat shocked when he blew that volume out of the water with a stunning, brilliant conclusion.

Diana’s journey of self-discovery reaches its culmination when she learns that she has always existed – a personification of justice and mercy that has been reborn countless times throughout history. The more familiar Wonder Woman who met Steve Trevor was only one such iteration. Only now, mankind’s endless wars and atrocities have made an enemy unbelievably strong – strong enough to exile all the gods and attempt to wipe Diana from the loom of fate. But, one strand was hidden and still persists. The current, modern Diana must face her destiny and choose to become Wonder Woman again. This story was so fabulously woven that I wanted to cheer as it unfolded (I *may* have whooped out loud at one point). Straczynski has not only given the Warrior Princess a new direction and perspective, but has done so without losing any of what makes the character so iconic. The story has lots of action, but also many surprises. There are even a few cameos that not only delight, but fit within the story seamlessly. And the last few pages may just bring a tear to your eye.

The redesigned Diana looks so new, but is still so quintessentially Wonder Woman. Overall, my only disappointment is that there is no more of Straczynski’s Diana to come. He has set the bar so high, I’m not sure it can ever be surpassed. Highly recommended!
