Good Article, Sad Day for Democracy
By Loyd Eskildson
'Jahar's World' (Dzhokhar Tsarnaev) tells of a charming youngster who became a monster. He'd been captain of his high-school wrestling team for two years and a promising student. He'd lived with his brother and family for a decade in America, became a U.S. citizen (11/11/12), and wanted to become an engineer (found courses too hard), or a nurse. He'd spent his first seven years in Kyrgyzstan where his father had grown up exiled from Chechnya. About the only indication Jahar gave of being different was the one time he defended some terrorist attacks as justified 'because of what the U.S. does in other countries.'

His father's ability to support the family was hindered by arthritis and by 2009 the family was back on food stamps and cash benefits. Older brother Tamerlan had difficulty learning English, dropped out of community college, took up religion, and stopped boxing in 2011 - claiming it was not permitted for Muslims. The father became depressed by the growing religiousness of his wife and older son, returned to Russia in 2011; mother did also - partly to escape prosecution for shoplifting $1,800 worth of items at Lord and Taylor.

Jahar increasingly came under the influence of his older brother, especially after Tamerlan returned from six months in Dagestan (Russia), visiting relatives in an area embroiled in government-Muslim friction. Jahar began failing most of his classes, his brother and sister-in-law lost their Section 8 housing subsidy. February of 2013 Tamerlan drove to New Hampshire and bought 48 fireworks mortars containing 8 lbs. of low-explosive power, while Jahar downloaded Islamic militant tracts - including an article on how to make an IED using a pressure cooker.

His acquaintances are still wondering what happened.

The article simply tries to present Jahar as he is - w/o understanding such individuals, how are we to reduce these problems? Shame on Walmart and Walgreens for pulling this issue.

Read it! Excellent article.

19 year old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's story is also a tragedy, like the Boston bombing. Janet Reitman extensively interviews family friends, coaches, teammates, and many of Dzhokhar's friends to paint a picture of a likeable, popular, good student whose family abandoned him at a crucial time in his life leaving him under the influence of a dominating and increasingly extremist and violence oriented older brother.
The article fits and greatly expands the picture I'd pieced together from many articles about the brothers. Clearly too many people need to demonize Dzhokhar because they live in an absolute black and white world. This is an amazingly complex story of a wonderful kid taken down a terribly wrong and destructive path at a dangerous age and vulnerable time of his life by his older brother.
As counterterrorism officials told the Wall Street Journal(May 16)"they believe that without Tamerlan's involvement, no attack would have taken place. Without Dzhokhar's alledged involvement, they believe there still would have been some kind of violence committed by Tamerlan...
There seems to be little recognition of the differing culpability of the teenage Dzhokhar and his older brother. On the part of too many there seems to be a demonizing campaign reminiscent of a lynch mob--because, with his brother dead, Dzhokhar is the only target left for their anger.
This article paints a far more complex picture. It is well worth reading. It would be good if everyone read it.

Drive On, Rolling Stone!
By John B. Dean
Why is it ok for CBS, ABC, NBC, PBS, all their affiliates, and many others, including other magazines,to report on this news worthy event, but when Rolling Stone exercises their right to do the same, it turns into a form of, "How Dare You Commit Such Blasphemy"!?
