The definitive Phantom Zone story. . .
By Jeff F
Who better to create the ultimate Superman/Phantom Zone story than the creator of Howard the Duck and the artist of Tomb of Dracula? This 4-issue miniseries sees all (and I do mean all) of the Phantom Zone criminals escaping and wreaking havoc on Earth, as Superman is trapped in the Zone and must find a way back. It's how Superman 2 might have turned out with a much bigger budget and no copyright issues preventing other DC characters from appearing. Being used to a more contemporary style of pacing and storytelling, a reader might find the first issue difficult to get through, as it's mostly a retelling of all of the Silver Age Phantom Zone stories; however, what's truly remarkable about Phantom Zone is that today it would probably be a massive crossover, with multiple tie-in miniseries and crossover issues, but here, the story delivers the same impact and scope in just 4 issues. Also, each of the Phantom Zone characters is given equal development and focus; it's not just the usual "duo/trio of escapees, more than likely led by General Zod". The Zone itself is finally fleshed out as a complex and interesting setting. The DC Comics Presents issue at the end of the trade is intended as the "final" Phantom Zone story after Crisis on Infinite Earths; it's not as a strong as the miniseries proper, but it's a solid read. Highly recommended (and a less divisive take on the subject matter seen in Man of Steel).

I thought this story would be too obscure; but lo and behold...
By cdillon85
My elder cousin purchased these issues (or I did-hard to remember)when they came out; at least the mini-series. I do remember getting the DC Comics Presents final issue. In fact, I still have it. The story is compelling, and it was good to see others from the Justice League involved. Re-reading them after all these years, I was bemused at how calm Bats and WW were while they were considering the Kryptonians they found themselves dealing with. And reading the last story, I realized how things were going to change due to the Crisis. I wasn't thrilled with that, because one issue was left unexplained. (Spoiler Alert! Read further at own risk!)When Mxyzptlk destroyed the Zone...WHAT HAPPENED TO MON-EL!?! I do know what eventually happened to him (Long Live the Legion!), but not in the interim. That's why a mere 4 stars were awarded. But no regrets on this purchase.

One of the best original mini-series' ever written
By K. Jump
Decades after its initial publication as a mini-series in the early 1980s, THE PHANTOM ZONE still stands as the finest tale of the Zone and its nefarious inhabitants--the most infamous criminals from Superman's home planet of Krypton--yet conceived. Steve Gerber's script is ambitious and takes pains to develop not only the Phantom Zone criminals themselves in new and fresh ways but likewise the Zone itself. Gerber imagines there's a little more to the Zone than purple ghostliness, and reveals an evil intelligence behind the Zone that adds an element of otherworldly horror to the superhero action. And there is a great deal of action, as one might expect from a tale in which Earth is invaded by a small army of super villains who each possess the same powers as Superman himself. Though Superman is the tale's primary protagonist, a number of other heroes--including Supergirl, Wonder Woman, Batman, and Green Lantern--all figure prominently as well. As for the Phantom Zone villains, they go all-out in this one. They don't want to just conquer Superman's adopted home world this time--they have a far more terrible revenge than that in mind. General Zod is, of course, the ringleader of the escaped prisoners, but the other villains--such as the beautiful but psychopathic Faora, the ambitious scientist Jax-Ur, and Superman's own kinsman, Kru-El, among others--each get their turn in the spotlight. It's a serious and surprisingly intense tale of revenge, desperation and ultimately heroism, one for which Gene Colan's fantastic artwork is perfectly suited. Colan always excelled at drawing horrific comic book stories, and there is more than a little of the horrific in this particular Superman story. Exceptionally well written and illustrated, THE PHANTOM ZONE is one of the best original mini-series' ever created, and anyone who reads it will never think of the evil Zod--or the greater evil that lurks within the Zone itself--in the same way again.
