Reflections on the Revolution in France: Volume 2 Paperback: 002 (Select Works of Edmund Burke), by Edmund Burke

Originally published by Oxford University Press in the 1890s, the famed three-volume Payne edition of Select Works is universally revered by students of English history and political thought. Faithfully reproduced in each volume are E. J. Payne's notes and introductory essays. Francis Canavan, one of the great Burke scholars of the twentieth century, has added forewords.Volume 2 consists of Burke's most renowned work, Reflections on the Revolution in France. In it, he excoriates French revolutionary leaders for recklessly destroying France's venerable institutions and way of life. He attempts not only to explain the events of the new revolution to his readers but also to persuade them that the revolution menaces the civilization of Europe in general and that of Britain in particular. In addition, he articulates a coherent political countertheory that organizes his own beliefs about God, humanity, and society. This is Burke's most famous work, for over two centuries read, discussed, and pondered by thousands of students and general readers as well as by professional scholars.

Francis Canavan (1917-2009) was Professor of Political Science at Fordham University from 1966 until his retirement in 1988.

Freedom as Tyranny in the French Revolution
By John M. Balouziyeh
1. Background
Edmund Burke (1729-1797) was a political theorist and British statesman who was a member of the House of Commons and a major figure in the Whig party. He is best known for his oratory and for being an "advocate of political prudence and compromise." He was sympathetic with the concerns expressed by American statesmen prior to the American Revolution and was famous for pleading the cause of the American colonists in British Parliament and for his speech to the House of Commons on conciliation with the American colonies. He urged England to "leave America, if she has taxable matter in her, to tax herself. I am not going here into the distinctions of rights, nor attempting to mark their boundaries; I hate the very sound of them ... Leave the Americans as they anciently stood, and these distinctions, born of our unhappy contest, will die along with it." Burke continually lobbied for a more equitable treatment of the American colonists, but did not feel that their concerns were being adequately addressed by the English Parliament. When the Revolutionary War ultimately broke out, he did not give it his express support, but he did approve of the resulting conservative republic based on time-tested principles and natural law.
Burke's view of the French Revolution was wholly different. He attacked the French Revolution for having cast off the first principles that hold together societies: piety, custom, tradition, and continuity with the past. All of these ground society in a sense of justice and of necessary authority. The French Enlightenment instead pushed "claims of abstract right upon metaphysical premises, and [endeavored] to govern the commonwealth by notions of perfection."
In response to the French aristocrat Charles-Jean-François Depont, who asked Burke to share his impressions of the Revolution, Burke wrote Reflections on the Revolution in France in late 1789, just months after the fall of the Bastille at the beginning of the Revolution. Burke's Reflections, a thorough assessment of the events of the day, became after it was published in 1790 one of the best-known intellectual attacks against the French Revolution. In the twentieth century, it influenced conservatives, who re-cast Burke's arguments to apply to the then-contemporary challenges threatening liberty, such as communism.

2. The Text
a. Introduction
In his Reflections, Burke fiercely opposed the French Revolution and the French Jacobins. He predicted that the Revolution, which was based on an unreal and distorted view of human nature, would end disastrously. The "legislators who framed the ancient republics ... were obliged to study human nature" (¶ 342), because any polity cannot be firmly established without an accurate understanding of men and of their habits. The French Revolutionaries, in contrast, led by Rousseau, Turgot, and other philosophes, ignored the biblical teachings on man's sinful nature and cast all of their faith on his perfectibility and ability to reason. Burke condemned this vehemently, for he "could not conceive of a durable social order without the spirit of piety."

b. Reasons for Opposing the French Revolution
The ideological underpinning of the French Revolution was based on abstract principles and not hard realities. Burke writes: "The science of constructing a commonwealth, or renovating it, or reforming it, is, like every other experimental science, not to be taught a priori. Nor is it a short experience that can instruct us in that practical science" (¶ 109). Such an approach, says Burke, leads to a declaration of abstract rights to a series of goods, such as food and medicine, to a confounded "homogenous mass" (¶ 342) that ignores all distinctions between classes and citizens. The state that seeks to abolish all classes and treat all equally in this respect is like the husbandman who does not have enough of common sense not to "abstract and equalize [all his sheep, horses, and oxen] into animals without providing for each kind an appropriate food, care, and employment, whilst he, the economist, disposer, and shepherd of his own kindred, subliming himself into an airy metaphysician, was resolved to know nothing of his flocks but as men in general" (¶ 342). Furthermore, the revolutionaries declare their rights to a series of goods without elaborating "the method of procuring and administering them" (¶ 108).
Burke predicted that a political ideology founded upon abstract rights could easily be easily twisted to justify tyranny. Factions would prevail in the army and the only way of "securing military obedience in this state of things" would be through a "popular general" who would command the army and become the master "of your whole republic" (¶ 401). Indeed, the fierce course of Napoleon would ultimately vindicate Burke and prove his views right.

c. Property and Equality
Burke further rejects the French revolutionaries' egalitarian principles and he recognizes that some men are more fit to be in a ruling class than others: "the state suffers oppression if such as [hairdressers, tallow-chandlers, etc.], either individually or collectively, are permitted to rule" (¶ 90). The revolutionaries believe they are "combating prejudice," but in reality, they are "at war with nature" (¶ 90). Even the Scriptures recognize the ruler's need for leisure and learning; the working man, whose time will be filled by menial labor, will not have developed the wisdom necessary for ruling, for the "wisdom of a learned man cometh by opportunity of leisure; and he that hath little business shall become wise ... How can he get wisdom that holdeth the plough, and that glorieth in the goad; that driveth oxen; and is occupied in their labours; and whose talk is of bullocks?" (Ecclesiasticus, chap. xxxviii. verses 24, 25, referencing ¶ 90).
Regarding the equal distribution of property, Burke writes that the "characteristic essence of property, formed out of the combined principles of its acquisition and conservation, is to be unequal" (¶ 93). Furthermore, Burke writes that the "same quantity of property, which is by the natural course of things divided among many, has not the same operation" (¶ 93). Thus, one property, if it is equally divided among many, may not be as useful as it would be if it were held by one owner, for its "defensive power is weakened as it is diffused. In this diffusion each man's portion is less than what, in the eagerness of his desires, he may flatter himself to obtain by dissipating the accumulations of others." Burke thus rejects the pillaging of the wealthy of the aristocracy for the purpose of redistribution under the French Revolution; for "He that has but five shillings in the partnership has as good a right to it as he that has five hundred pounds has to his larger proportion" (¶ 105).

d. A Place for Prejudice
He further advocates for a role for what he calls "'prejudice," a "general bank and capital of nations and of ages" comprised of irrational, untaught feelings and cherished values. Prejudice "previously engages the mind in a steady course of wisdom and virtue and does not leave the man hesitating in the moment of decision skeptical, puzzled, and unresolved. Prejudice renders a man's virtue his habit, and not a series of unconnected acts. Through just prejudice, his duty becomes a part of his nature" (¶ 161).
Burke refutes Rousseau's social contract theory; yet he concedes that "Society is indeed a contract" (¶ 181). However, this contract is not a mere "partnership agreement in a trade of pepper and coffee, calico, or tobacco, or some other such low concern, to be taken up for a little temporary interest, and to be dissolved by the fancy of the parties" (¶ 181). Rather, it is a true "contract of eternal society, linking the lower with the higher natures, connecting the visible and invisible world, according to a fixed compact sanctioned by the inviolable oath which holds all physical and all moral natures, each in their appointed place" (¶ 181). This contract ultimately gives rise to high civil social order and links the past to the present and future.

e. Casting Off History and Tradition
The French revolutionaries, in contrast, have abruptly cut off the present from the past. Centuries of teachings on man's fallenness and corruption have no place in their idealistic worldview. The revolutionaries instead believed that man was naturally benevolent and generous, but was corrupted by institutions, which the revolutionaries set out to reform. They sought to establish a new moral order based on nothing more than man's reason and fancy. This is contrasted with the Glorious Revolution of England, which Burke constantly traces back to laws, customs, and traditions, and he further shows how those who were instituting the reforms constantly invoked past laws that legitimized these reforms. Advocating for gradual reform, he wrote that what took place in England was not a revolution but rather, the avoidance thereof.
In England, the nobility and the church are the two cornerstones of civilization and are founded on and preserved by what Burke calls "the spirit of a gentleman and the spirit of religion" (¶ 149). Burke writes, "Nothing is more certain than that our manners, our civilization, and all the good things which are connected with manners and with civilization have, in this European world of ours, depended for ages upon two principles and were, indeed, the result of both combined: I mean the spirit of a gentleman and the spirit of religion" (¶ 149). To do away with these two spirits would be to do away with the institutions of the nobility and the church. It is thus no coincidence that the French revolutionaries would have been so quick to attack the "keepers" of the story, sending thirteen thousand aristocrats and priests, nuns, and other clergy to the guillotine, seizing church property, casting off old forms and forging a new way forward. The guardians of the metanarrative were being executed, for in the French Revolution, all was "to be changed. All the pleasing illusions which made power gentle and obedience liberal, which harmonized the different shades of life, and which, by a bland assimilation, incorporated into politics the sentiments which beautify and soften private society, are to be dissolved by this new conquering empire of light and reason" (¶ 143). The French Revolution would cast off the moral imagination of history and tradition and replace it with the stark uniformity of reason and conformity: "All the super-added ideas, furnished from the wardrobe of a moral imagination, which the heart owns and the understanding ratifies as necessary to cover the defects of our naked, shivering nature, and to raise it to dignity in our own estimation, are to be exploded as a ridiculous, absurd, and antiquated fashion" (¶ 143).
Yet Burke is not against all change. He is a liberal conservative in that he believes that some change is good when it is necessary to preserve or restore a nation's first principles and old good order. He writes, "A state without the means of some change is without the means of its conservation. Without such means it might even risk the loss of that part of the constitution which it wished the most religiously to preserve" (¶ 42). Statutes are to be reformed for the continuity of principles. This process of reforming is not to be confused with meliorism; rather, prudent change is the means of social preservation. Change is acceptable only when it is necessary, and it is prudent that change be incremental for the sake of upholding tradition. As for revolution, it is only available as a last means when absolute necessity calls upon it. Burke condemns those who too readily call for revolution; he s"never liked this continual talk of resistance and revolution, or the practice of making the extreme medicine of the constitution its daily bread. It renders the habit of society dangerously valetudinary; it is taking periodical doses of mercury sublimate and swallowing down repeated provocatives of cantharides to our love of liberty" (¶ 113).

The Life of Robert Loraine: The Stage, the Sky, and George Bernard Shaw, by Lanayre D. Liggera

Robert Loraine was born in a niche of time when technology exploded into a world whose keyword was Progress. Both he and his life-long friend George Bernard Shaw believed they were in an evolutionary period of humanity. Born into a theatrical family, he understood its clashes of temperament and competition for the attention of the audience. He was fortunate to be playing in London by age twenty-one, and securing lead roles two years later. Thus, it was incomprehensible to his peers when he volunteered to fight in the Boer War.

After his year of service, he heeded his father’s advice; first conquer London, and then America He accepted a contract from Daniel Frohman in New York. Four years of dusty old plots led him to yearn for something new, which he found in Shaw’s Man and Superman. A two year tour in the role of John Tanner led him to professional and financial success.

This lust for something new led him beyond the perimeters of the stage into pioneer aviation. Visualizing the aeroplane’s unlimited potential, he challenged the theory that flight could only take place in calm weather by flying through a raging thunderstorm. Ever of a military mind, he also demonstrated the machine’s capacity for scouting at military maneuvers. With political storm clouds closing in again in 1914, Robert volunteered six days before his country declared war on Germany. Dispatched to the Royal Flying Corps, he served all four years of the war, rose to the highest rank of any civilian, and was gravely wounded twice.

Robert married at age forty-five, but the compromises of domesticity did not come easily to him. His young wife, Winifred, suffered through the downward spiral of an aging actor. The thirties brought the great depression and he returned to the United States, attempting to make money on Broadway or in Hollywood. Finally able to return to England in November, 1935, he died two days before Christmas.

Unique Biography of an Unusual WWI Pilot
By Steve Suddaby
The Life of Robert Loraine is a unique biography of an unusual World War I pilot. The war began when Loraine was 38 – two decades older than most wartime pilots. At that point he was already an actor famous in Britain and America, a Boer War veteran, the first man to fly the Irish Sea, a pioneer in the military use of wireless telegraphy from the air, and a collaborator with the even-more-famous playwright George Bernard Shaw. By the time the war ended, Loraine had been C.O. of 40 Squadron, Wing Commander of 14 Wing, and had risen to the rank of Lt. Colonel. He had also been decorated and twice wounded, permanently losing a lung and much of the mobility in one leg. Nevertheless, he continued on with stage and screen acting on two continents until his death in 1935.

This is a biography of the whole man, not just that of the Royal Flying Corps and Royal Air Force pilot. Lannie Liggera, with her degree in Literature and 14 years as chairman of the New England – New York Chapter of the Western Front Association, is uniquely qualified to write about Loraine’s life on the stage and in the cockpit. She is as adept at describing the intricacies of aviation operations as she is at describing the complex world of early-20th Century theater. This meticulously researched biography, including interviews with his family, shows Lannie’s passion for the topic, but she still provides an unblinking view of this fascinating man and his many foibles. This biography is particularly valuable for its descriptions of how Loraine’s service in the Great War affected the rest of his life – both positively and negatively. Highly recommended.

--Steve Suddaby

Full disclosure – Lannie Liggera has been a friend and colleague of this reviewer for many years. (WWI aviation research is a small world.) Nevertheless, this is a fascinating work.

The reviewer is past president of the World War One Historical Association. An earlier version of this review was written for the journal Over the Front.

Fine portrait of one of the first actors to play Shaw's Jack Tanner
By Grace
For Shaw admirers and scholars, Liggera's book provides a clear-sighted portrait of an actor GBS much admired. Liggera revises, corrects, and expands upon the previous biography of Loraine. As the National Theatre prepares to mount a production of 'Man and Superman' starring Ralph Fiennes in 2015, this book can teach readers a great deal about the fascinating career of one of the first Jack Tanners.

What Do We Tell the Children?: Talking to Kids About Death and Dying, by Joseph M. Primo

One out of seven children will lose a parent before they are 20. The statistics are sobering, but they are also a call for preparedness. However, pastors and counselors of all types are often at a loss when dealing with a grieving child. Talking to adults about death and grief is difficult; it's all the more challenging to talk to children and teens. The stakes are high: grieving children are high-risk for substance abuse, promiscuity, depression, isolation, and suicide. Yet, despite this, most of these kids grow up to be normal or exceptional adults. But their chance to become healthy adults increases with the support of a loving community.
Supporting grieving children requires intentionality, open communication, and patience. Rather than avoid all conversations on death or pretend like it never happened, normalizing grief and offering support requires us to be in-tune with kids through dialogue as they grapple with questions of “how” and “why.” When listening to children in grief, we often have to embrace the mystery, offer love and compassion, and stick with the basics. The author says, "We don’t have to answer the why and how for them, but we can assure our children that God is with us as we suffer. We can do so by doing good for others and pointing out all of those moments when someone has done something good for us. I believe that most of the time that’s as far as we will get, and that is okay."

Should be in every parent's book case
By Terry
Joseph Primo, a pediatric grief counselor, has written this brilliant book to help parents, caregivers and friends of grieving children to help the child get through this difficult process.

Because we often speak of death and dying in hushed tones and almost never around children, the child who finds himself facing the loss of a parent or sibling or loved one is often left to his own devices in trying to figure out how to process this profound event. We don't know what to say to a grieving child, so we often seek to silence them with tired, old "words of wisdom" that often do much more harm than good.

Mr. Primo provides concrete suggestions for making sure that you are listening to how a grieving child feels, rather than telling a grieving child how to feel. He suggests open ended questions and remarks that encourage a child to feel safe enough to talk about how they are feeling. He gives numerous examples of things said and done by the children he has helped in his practice, too.

Almost 4 years ago, my mother died at home following a very long illness in which I was her caregiver. My 7 year old son (who is home schooled) was her daily companion as much as I was and when the time came that death was clearly imminent, I told him I believed she would die very soon and asked him if he wanted to be in the room with her and the rest of us. I cannot tell you how conflicted I was - I had no idea whether this would make his grief easier to bear or if it would screw him up forever! I wish I had had this book back then because I would have been so much less stressed.

My son insisted that he wanted to be with his grandmother and the rest of us so he was present at her death. He cried when she died and again, when the funeral home came to take his grandmother, but he seemed oddly able to put it in perspective very quickly. I worried about that for a long time following, unsure if that was normal or not. It was comforting to me to read Mr. Primo's description of very normal, healthy reactions to dying and death by children, even 4 years after my mother's death.

Because our society has changed so much, children can spend their entire childhoods never encountering death in a very personal way. However, it doesn't alter the fact that every living thing dies at some point and that some children will sadly face the death of a person that very much shapes their lives. When that happens, the adults left to help the grieving child are usually woefully unprepared for that task. This book can change that and, I believe, can help parents begin to discuss death and dying and grief with the children they love long before grief touches their lives.

We try to prepare children for all of the other difficult things they will face in their lives. With this book, we can begin to deal with our own fears and uncertainties surrounding death so that we can be prepared to offer loving, solid support to a grieving child.

Preparing your children after a death or an upcoming death is heartbreaking, but this book helps put things into perspective...
By [KNDY] Dennis A. Amith
I really never had to deal with death from a family member until I was in my early 20's but I have had friends who have died at such an early age and have seen their mourning families.

But as we get older, things change in life where people you once went to school with, people you work with, they may be there one day and gone the other.

As a parent, there have been times where my health or my wife's health has been a major concern, and having brought a young child into this world, you have these conversations of what if one was to pass away or is about to pass away, how would you prepare your child.

I have invested in Christian books and audio books but having seen quite a few friends lose a child or lose a loved one and having to go to their family and break the bad news, I have been wanting to find a book that would help ease the pain. As I have had friends who asked if I knew any books that helped one handle dealing with children after a spouse's death.

While I knew of Christian books, I have been wanting a book that was more focused on love, compassion but not having to have a religious angle, for those who may not be wanting that in their life.

And I have now found an excellent book with Joseph M. Primo's "What Do We Tell the Children?: Talking to Kids About Death and Dying".

Primo's book goes into detail of his experiences but also how parents, grandparents or guardians can discuss with children about death and dying.

Primo's book breaks down the chapters as follows:

1. Put On Your Own Oxygen Mask First
2. Kids Feel, Too
3. Myths
4. Components of a Child's Grief
5. What Do We Tell the Children?
6. Listening without Lollipops
7. On Death and Lying
8. A Cultural Rebirth

JUDGMENT CALL:

I for one bought this book, wanting to know how he was able to help others, but also wanting to know if something happens to me or my wife, the best way the surviving parent can help our child not be in so much pain if something is unfortunate is to happen.

It's something that we usually don't want to think of, but as a parent and when you start seeing friends pass away and leaving behind a spouse and children, it does stay in your mind quite often than you would have hoped and you just want to prepare for such things.

Also, a conversation with a father and a friend who lost a spouse and a child due to an electrical fire. They bought a new house but one day, the night before the Super Bowl, there was an electrical fire and he was able to barely survive with his wife and children. He was a bit rattled, now living in a home temporarily that his insurance put him and his family in but he kept asking, if he lost his wife, he wasn't sure how he would go on. If he lost his children, how he could live. And then watching the nightly news during the winter and seeing those who were unfortunate and were unable to escape their house fire. Were not able to survive during an accident.

And with so many things happening in our lives, even my son is asking about death. About people he knew that has died, having a great grandparents and grandparents who's health are dwindling due to Alzheimer's Disease or other health related issues and now having to have to deal with his own parents having had some significant health related issues. It's scary.

But I felt that the more I think about death or the uncertain situations that we live in but most importantly, the more I think about my son without one of us, it hurts.

So, I'm very grateful for Mr. Primo because he actually goes into details of how certain family grieves but how he has handled it and his thoughts on the matter. May it be a mother who carries a photo of her dead child with a shot in the head to a father who tried to protect their children after finding his wife hanging on the monkey bars with a suicide note and the he and the children seeing it. Also, how he was able to help families and children after 9/11.

But Primo is able to break things down for how children at certain stages or ages would deal with death.

Primo's book is well-written, it also is heartfelt in the way he writes. Having dealt with so many families, this is a book that doesn't preach anything religious (although there are a few pages of where religion can help facilitate one's grieving process), it is first and foremost wanting to help parents or family members deal with grieving but also how to prepare our children for certain news.

How we deal with a children who is hurting after a parent's death? Ways of honoring one's death or remembering their death along with the children. How do we deal with children who are tired of hearing "everything is going to be OK?" or "your loved one is in a better place?", it's easy for people to say those words to a child but for child, in their mind they are feeling abandoned and alone. But also to recognize that these feelings are natural and appropriate. But how it's important to have people support that child during their grieving process.

Also, how metaphors can create a mess. One example was a man who told his children after his wife was killed in crash that the angels came and took her to God in heaven. But then the metaphor which was meant to calm, became a problem when the children thought the angels may take them away and were afraid to leave the house. But these things can be fixed and Primo also goes into detail of how spiritual beliefs can be abstract, but needing to know that for young children, who are concerned with the hear and now and what they can see and goes into detail of how he has helped families with this. Especially questions of if this loved one is in heaven, how come their body is in a casket?

But Primo's book is quite informative and not a long read 134-pages long.

If you are a grieving parent, a parent wanting to prepare themselves or their significant other if one is to pass away, for preparation for the inevitable or if you know someone who is grieving and having a difficult time of having to communicate with their children after losing a love one, I highly recommend Joseph M. Primo's "What Do We Tell the Children?: Talking to Kids About Death and Dying ".

I am using this to talk to my children after losing my husband
By N. Glenn
It was strange timing in my life to have this book brought to my attention after losing my husband in November to Cancer. I have been struggling a lot with figuring out how to talk to my young children about this loss, this book was very informative and easy for me to use in my own situation to help explain things that are very difficult. I would recommend this book to anyone that should have to learn how to tell children about death and be with them as they cope and grieve.

A Concise History of Nazi Germany, by Joseph W. Bendersky

This balanced history offers a concise, readable introduction to Nazi Germany. Combining compelling narrative storytelling with analysis, Joseph W. Bendersky offers an authoritative survey of the major political, economic, and social factors that powered the rise and fall of the Third Reich. Now in its fourth edition, the book incorporates significant research of recent years, analysis of the politics of memory, postwar German controversies about World War II and the Nazi era, and more on non-Jewish victims. Delving into the complexity of social life within the Nazi state, it also reemphasizes the crucial role played by racial ideology in determining the policies and practices of the Third Reich. Bendersky paints a fascinating picture of how average citizens negotiated their way through both the threatening power behind certain Nazi policies and the strong enticements to acquiesce or collaborate. His classic treatment provides an invaluable overview of a subject that retains its historical significance and contemporary importance.

Review
Joseph Benderksy's new edition of A Concise History of Nazi Germany manages to be concise and comprehensive—as well as up-to-date. I have used earlier editions in my courses on twentieth-century Germany with great success. It leads students through Nazism from its inception in post–World War I Germany to the years of the Third Reich and then into what he calls the ‘intractable Nazi legacy’ that lives on to this day. Nazism, it seems, will not go away. This book provides students with a solid platform from which to launch their exploration of the effects and the meaning of the Nazi phenomenon. (Karl A. Schleunes, University of North Carolina at Greensboro)

Bendersky's history is an excellent, well-written introduction to the major issues and complicated structure of Nazi Germany. His text complements monographs on specific topics and equips students to handle them better. (Richard Breitman, American University)

Incorporating significant research of recent years, analysis of the politics of memory, German controversies and more material on non-Jewish victims of the war, Bendersky examines concisely the rise and fall of the Third Reich. He begins with the origins and development of Nazism from 1919 to 1928, discussing the Weimar Republic in crisis, the rise of Hitler, the history of the roots of Nazi ideology, and party structure, propaganda, and followers during the early days. He then works through the seizure and consolidation of power from 1929 to 1934, including the parliamentary struggles for power, Hitler's use and abuse of the legal system, the nazification of German society from 1934 to 1938, and the rise and fall of Nazism in Europe from 1933 to 1945. He closes with the aforesaid material on the current struggle for justice and accurate historical memory. (Book News, Inc.)

Well written with factual information and historical analysis presented in a clear and balanced manner. Excellent reading for anyone looking to learn some history as opposed to the caricaturistic film/tv version of events that is unfortunately so common in the public consciousness lately. This book is very accessible to readers of all levels and the subject matter is important to learn about. Highly recommended.

Jews and Muslims in the Arab World: Haunted

Jews and Muslims in the Arab World highlights the effects of historical memory on the Arab-Israel conflict, demonstrating that both Jews and Arabs use stories of distant pasts to create their identities and shape their politics. Whether real or imagined, the past filtered through their collective memories has had and will continue to have enormous influence on how Jews and Arabs perceive themselves and each other. Jews and Muslims in the Arab World describes the ways in which the past is absorbed, internalized, and then processed among Jews and Arabs. The book stresses the importance of historical imagination on the current evolving political cultures, but does not claim that explanations from an ancient past shed light on every aspect of contemporary events.

Review
This impressive book deals with a significant topic that has not been studied before in a methodical and comprehensive manner. This comprehensive and comparative study extensively adds to our understanding of the two communities and their enduring conflict. This book should be read and digested by all those who are interested in these communities and their complex historical clash. (Gabriel (Gabi) Sheffer, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem)

This truly wonderful work should be essential reading for any serious scholar in Middle Eastern studies. (Khaleel Mohammed, San Diego State University)

Lassner and Troen have produced nothing less than a definitive prolegomenon to the Arab-Israel conflict and other current conflicts involving Muslims and Jews. They show that historical memory matters a great deal; it is neither irrelevant nor determinative, and not all historical communities are "imagined." Written in an exceptionally reader-friendly style, Jews and Muslims in the Arab World is a unique and riveting narrative, fair to both traditions, that anyone with even a mild interest will have trouble putting down. (Alan Dowty, University of Notre Dame)

A fascinating study of the interface between memory and politics as reflected in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. By providing a refreshing look at the pious myths bedeviling Middle Eastern politics, Lassner and Troen show with meticulous scholarship how both Arab nationalism as well as Zionism re-fashioned ancient traditions to legitimize modern political claims. With critical empathy to both sides, the authors warn against simplistic diplomatic attempts to solve the conflict without taking into account these deeply-held beliefs and traditions. At the same time, they call on both sides to listen to the voice of the Other and realize that history is not a seamless coat, but a multi-faceted mosaic, in which accepting the legitimacy of the other side does not by and in itself undermine one's own narrative. (Shlomo Avineri, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem)

Jews and Muslims in the Arab World shows why the Jewish and Palestinian struggles for self-determination have played such a central role in the history of these two peoples and how that history has provided the resources for both continuing the conflict and changing its configuration. Anyone interested in understanding the antipathy between Israelis and Palestinians and between Jews and Muslims will find no clearer introduction or explanation. (Donna Robinson Divine, Smith College)

This is an eloquent, clear-eyed examination of the way in which the principal parties in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and their partisans have understood, used, and misused history, religion, and collective memory in their perceptions of themselves, their adversaries, and the very essence of their relation. The authors' calm and reasoned voices leave the reader neither naively optimistic nor hopelessly pessimistic. This book ought to be required reading for anyone interested in the contemporary Middle East, and not least among those who should read this wise and informative book are the people of that troubled region themselves. (Norman A. Stillman, University of Oklahoma)

This is a remarkable work of scholarship and a valuable contribution to our understanding of the conflict. (Jewish Book World)

Scholars Jacob Lassner and S. Ilan Troen step forward with a masterly, majestic, original and thought-provoking volume....the authors deserve praise....Never before has the chasm which separates the Muslim world from its rivals been described more eloquently than it is in this book. It can only be hoped that this splendid volume, written by authors with an extraordinary knowledge of Islam and the Arab world, will do much to expose the naivete of those who constantly beat their breat in contrition before those who seek the destruction of the Jewish state. (Israel Journal of Foreign Affairs)

An excellent and unorthodox volume on Israel and the Arabs. This is not just another book on the Arab-Israeli conflict. The authors, whose objective is to reinterpret developments in the Arab-Israeli conflict, go about their corrective task with impressive erudition and forthrightness. The authors have written two books grafted into one, providing a unique culturally informed overview of the Arab-Israeli conflict. They have produced an essential and long overdue complement to existing scholarship on the subject. This is truly an important book. (Asher Susser, Tel Aviv University Journal of Israeli History: Politics, Society, Culture)
