Awesome!

The new line of Pauline Teen Books by Pauline Media promises to bring young people stories that “make you laugh – and sometimes cry, make you think and help you dream, and let you explore the real world.” If "a.k.a. Genius" by Marilee Haynes is any indication, this line of books is off to an incredible start.

Haynes tells the story of Gabe, a student at St. Jude Middle School who has just found out that, according to test results, he is supposed to be a genius. There are a few problems with this –his second-best friend Maya is supposed to be the smartest kid in school and doesn’t take kindly to being upstaged, he can’t even get his locker open, and his father would much rather he be good in sports than good in school. Meanwhile, he is asked to tutor Becca, a girl he likes so much he can barely speak in her presence, and his best friend Linc is trying to “woo” (his words) a girl named Rachel. There is a lot going on in the mind of a middle-school boy.

Gabe, Maya, Linc, Rachel and a few other students all end up in a class for gifted students, nick-named the G.A.S. class. Taught by a very cool Sister Stevie, the class is preparing to take part in an academic Olympics competition.

Haynes has made a great splash with this debut novel. Unlike so many books in the Catholic Fiction genre, "a.k.a. Genius" is a story about real middle-school kids with real middle-school problems. While filled with elements of the Catholic faith, it isn’t overly pious or preachy. This is a book middle-schoolers would actually want to read, and laugh out loud while they are doing it. It is a Catholic “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” without the accompanying comics. A.k.a. Genius will make readers laugh and cry and teaches an important lesson about self-acceptance in the process.

There are many books I have enjoyed, but there are only a handful of stories that I consider “awesome.” "A.k.a. Genius" is one of those books.

A highly recommended and hugely enjoyable middle grade novel

The thing about middle-grade fiction is that it's really fast to read. Don't let that fool you into thinking this has nothing to say, though.

The writing and editing in this book are top-of-the-line, and the message in it is one that I need to hear, and I'm a littttttttle older than the preteen audience this is written for.

Haven't you ever battled loneliness and misunderstanding? And hey, how about those fragrant little fumes that sometimes escape from your nether regions? (Nope, I don't know ANYTHING about that. NOT. A. THING.)

The story's believable, the characters lovable, and the overall package good. Now that I'm done with it, I'll be sneaking it onto my eight-year-old's shelves so she can enjoy it too.

Great book to read!

I really liked this book. I am going into 5th grade and I think this book is a good example of what middle school will be like. I like Gabe a lot because he was funny and even though he was not good at sports he could help his friends who were good at sports. I thought it was a good mixture of funny and sad. Some parts I laughed out loud and some parts I couldn't even talk. I would definitely recommend this book to someone who is trying to find a good book to read.

About the Author

Michelle Spring has published six crime novels including Every Breath You Take (short-listed as Best First Novel for both an Anthony and an Arthur Ellis Award), Nights in White Satin, In the Midnight Hour (winner of the Arthur Ellis Award for Best Novel) and The Night Lawyer. She mentors novelists, and teaches both creative writing and academic writing. She is currently Royal Literary Fellow at Magdalene College, Cambridge.

Laurie R. King has twenty-three novels in print, most of them crime novels, that include the wildly popular Mary Russell/Sherlock Holmes series (The Beekeeper's Apprentice, Garment of Shadows). Her novels have won the Edgar, Creasey, Wolfe, Lambda, and Macavity awards, and appear regularly on the New York Times bestseller list.

Not genre-specific enough and a very weak chapter on "Plotting"

If you own Writer's Digest's "Write Great Fiction" series, like I do, or a collection of similar books, you will regret buying this book. Chapters 1 and 2 of Part 1 seemed to promise great stuff with introductory discussions about crime and crime writing. But further down the line, things start to get watered down from crime-specific tips to general guidelines on storycraft applicable to almost any genre. The chapter on "Plotting" (only 13 pages) was a wishy-washy discussion on the "organic approach" vs the "orderly approach" (pantser vs outliner). It was a far cry from my expectation of solid nuts-and- bolts on plotting. Which brings me to my recommendation. For an excellent and detailed step-by-step treatment on plotting a thriller and mystery, go for James Frey's "How to Write a Damn Good Mystery" and "How to Write a Damn Good Thriller". Don't get both, buy either, as there's duplication of material.) "Part II: Tips and Takes" did not keep me from nearly dozing off. For example, Lee Child's essay in large part discussed that homo sapiens out-survived the Neanderthals because the former were able to communicate. Then story-telling over a roaring fire in caves was invented, blah, blah, blah. Two other contributors defended the relevancy of the locked-room mystery (for which British writer Agatha Christie was famous for) in current times. Maybe they being British had something to do with their opinions. "Part 3: Write on: Getting Your Story Across" is near-useless to published writers. Only the chapter "Distinctive Elements of Crime Fiction" hit the bull's eye on what this book was supposed to deliver. But overall, as a touted how-to on crime and thriller writing, this book misses its target by a mile!
