The definitive Phantom Zone story. . .
By Jeff F
Who better to create the ultimate Superman/Phantom Zone story than the creator of Howard the Duck and the artist of Tomb of Dracula? This 4-issue miniseries sees all (and I do mean all) of the Phantom Zone criminals escaping and wreaking havoc on Earth, as Superman is trapped in the Zone and must find a way back. It's how Superman 2 might have turned out with a much bigger budget and no copyright issues preventing other DC characters from appearing. Being used to a more contemporary style of pacing and storytelling, a reader might find the first issue difficult to get through, as it's mostly a retelling of all of the Silver Age Phantom Zone stories; however, what's truly remarkable about Phantom Zone is that today it would probably be a massive crossover, with multiple tie-in miniseries and crossover issues, but here, the story delivers the same impact and scope in just 4 issues. Also, each of the Phantom Zone characters is given equal development and focus; it's not just the usual "duo/trio of escapees, more than likely led by General Zod". The Zone itself is finally fleshed out as a complex and interesting setting. The DC Comics Presents issue at the end of the trade is intended as the "final" Phantom Zone story after Crisis on Infinite Earths; it's not as a strong as the miniseries proper, but it's a solid read. Highly recommended (and a less divisive take on the subject matter seen in Man of Steel).

I thought this story would be too obscure; but lo and behold...
By cdillon85
My elder cousin purchased these issues (or I did-hard to remember)when they came out; at least the mini-series. I do remember getting the DC Comics Presents final issue. In fact, I still have it. The story is compelling, and it was good to see others from the Justice League involved. Re-reading them after all these years, I was bemused at how calm Bats and WW were while they were considering the Kryptonians they found themselves dealing with. And reading the last story, I realized how things were going to change due to the Crisis. I wasn't thrilled with that, because one issue was left unexplained. (Spoiler Alert! Read further at own risk!)When Mxyzptlk destroyed the Zone...WHAT HAPPENED TO MON-EL!?! I do know what eventually happened to him (Long Live the Legion!), but not in the interim. That's why a mere 4 stars were awarded. But no regrets on this purchase.

One of the best original mini-series' ever written
By K. Jump
Decades after its initial publication as a mini-series in the early 1980s, THE PHANTOM ZONE still stands as the finest tale of the Zone and its nefarious inhabitants--the most infamous criminals from Superman's home planet of Krypton--yet conceived. Steve Gerber's script is ambitious and takes pains to develop not only the Phantom Zone criminals themselves in new and fresh ways but likewise the Zone itself. Gerber imagines there's a little more to the Zone than purple ghostliness, and reveals an evil intelligence behind the Zone that adds an element of otherworldly horror to the superhero action. And there is a great deal of action, as one might expect from a tale in which Earth is invaded by a small army of super villains who each possess the same powers as Superman himself. Though Superman is the tale's primary protagonist, a number of other heroes--including Supergirl, Wonder Woman, Batman, and Green Lantern--all figure prominently as well. As for the Phantom Zone villains, they go all-out in this one. They don't want to just conquer Superman's adopted home world this time--they have a far more terrible revenge than that in mind. General Zod is, of course, the ringleader of the escaped prisoners, but the other villains--such as the beautiful but psychopathic Faora, the ambitious scientist Jax-Ur, and Superman's own kinsman, Kru-El, among others--each get their turn in the spotlight. It's a serious and surprisingly intense tale of revenge, desperation and ultimately heroism, one for which Gene Colan's fantastic artwork is perfectly suited. Colan always excelled at drawing horrific comic book stories, and there is more than a little of the horrific in this particular Superman story. Exceptionally well written and illustrated, THE PHANTOM ZONE is one of the best original mini-series' ever created, and anyone who reads it will never think of the evil Zod--or the greater evil that lurks within the Zone itself--in the same way again.

Nilsson: The Life of a Singer-Songwriter, by Alyn Shipton

Paul McCartney and John Lennon described him as the Beatles' "favorite group," he won Grammy awards, wrote and recorded hit songs, and yet no figure in popular music is as much of a paradox, or as underrated, as Harry Nilsson.

In this first ever full-length biography, Alyn Shipton traces Nilsson's life from his Brooklyn childhood to his Los Angeles adolescence and his gradual emergence as a uniquely talented singer-songwriter. With interviews from friends, family, and associates, and material drawn from an unfinished autobiography, Shipton probes beneath the enigma to discover the real Harry Nilsson. A major celebrity at a time when huge concerts and festivals were becoming the norm, Nilsson shunned live performance. His venue was the studio, his stage the dubbing booth, his greatest triumphs masterful examples of studio craft. He was a gifted composer of songs for a wide variety of performers, including the Ronettes, the Yardbirds, and the Monkees, yet Nilsson's own biggest hits were almost all written by other songwriters. He won two Grammy awards, in 1969 for "Everybody's Talkin'" (the theme song for Midnight Cowboy), and in 1972 for "Without You," had two top ten singles, numerous album successes, and wrote a number of songs--"Coconut" and "Jump into the Fire," to name just two--that still sound remarkably fresh and original today. He was once described by his producer Richard Perry as "the finest white male singer on the planet," but near the end of his life, Nilsson's career was marked by voice-damaging substance abuse and the infamous deaths of both Keith Moon and Mama Cass in his London flat.

Drawing on exclusive access to Nilsson's papers, Alyn Shipton's biography offers readers an intimate portrait of a man who has seemed both famous and unknowable--until now.

From Booklist
Award-winning British jazz critic Shipton calls Harry Nilsson “a songwriter’s songwriter.” Unlike most musicians, Nilsson never regularly toured and rarely performed in concert. Many of his songs were autobiographical, his way of exorcising perhaps the most painful episodes from his life, including his father’s abandoning the family when Nilsson was a boy and the gruesome death of his beloved cat. Shipton’s lovingly detailed biography of an often enigmatic figure chronicles the poverty of Nilsson’s childhood, his fledgling career as a singer-songwriter in Los Angeles, his bouts with fame, and his self-destructive behavior. His celebrity friendships are also explored, none more so than his complicated relationship with John Lennon. Shipton describes in detail the notorious incident that took place at the famous West Hollywood club, the Troubadour, in 1974, in which both men caused a drunken commotion. The murder of Lennon in 1980 had a profound impact on Nilsson; the notoriously private singer even campaigned for gun-control legislation. Nilsson fans will appreciate this long-awaited biography of an often neglected and underrated musician. --June Sawyers

Review

"Shipton... balances Nilsson's tragic story with exacting analysis of his talents and similarly detailed accounts of bacchanalian exploits with ex-Beatles and other bons vivants." --Rolling Stone

"An amazing tale." --Boston Globe

"Nilsson fans will appreciate this long awaited biography of an often neglected and underrated musician." --lBooklist

"An in-depth and informative book."

-Below the Fold

"Readers of this engrossing new biography will come away with a tremendous knowledge of and respect for the man and his music. And a great sense of loss, as this delightful fellow departed far too soon. " --Pop-Culture Classics

"The definitive work on the man who put the lime in the coconut."

-Houston Press

"Nilsson: The life of a singer-songwriter, is a fitting epitaph that keeps an unmatched legacy alive. Nilsson's eclectic, eccentric, funny-as-hell, wistful, whimsical, childlike brilliance will be listened to by people 100 years from now. And Shipton's biography does its best to explain it all."

-Goldmine Magazine

"Shipton, well noted as a researcher in jazz, has produced a very well-researched biography. Certainly more historical than analytical, the book is a fine read and an important addition to the literature because as emerging songwriters begin to explore songs written during a key period of songwriting, they will have no choice but to gravitate toward Nilsson." -T.R. Harrison, Jacksonville University, CHOICE

"Alyn Shipton's biography of singer-songwriter Harry Nilsson is a thorough, loving depiction of one of the era's most endearing and enigmatic characters."--Pacific Rim Review of Books

YOU'LL BE JUST WILD ABOUT HARRY
By EMC
"Nilsson: The Life Of A Singer-Songwriter" by Alyn Shipton will take you on a wild ride that you won't soon forget. It will charm you and at the same time will rip your heart to shreads with sadness. This in depth book about the late great Harry Nilsson covers Harry's life from sad beginning to tragic end. Harry was a complete party animal who knew no boundries when it came to drink and drugs and it slowly ate away at his health until there was nothing left of him. He lived his life the way he wanted and nobody could stand in his way except himself. He lived hard and had many wonderful friends like John Lennon, Ringo Starr, Micky Dolenz, Jimmy Webb, Keith Moon, Eric Idle and many others who loved to hang out with him at many a wild party which sometimes lasted for several days. They all idolized Harry and said that there was never a more caring and giving friend. Some of them even contributed to his downfall when they knew it was the wrong thing to do but they would do anything he wanted. He had that kind of power over them. Despite his wild lifestyle Harry was a wonderful father and husband who always put his family before all else. The only downside to the book is the skimpy discography and there are a handful of typos and the misspelling of "Klaatu" several times and the information regarding Tiny Tim's early years which was mainly in New York not in Cambridge Massachusetts. Harry was a big fan of Tiny's and first met the great producer Richard Perry at Tiny's concert at the Troubadour in Los Angeles. From there they became close friends with Richard going on to produce Harry's two finest albums "Nilsson Schmilsson" and "Son Of Schmilsson". The author worked closely with Harry's family since 2004 so there is plenty of new information that nobody has ever known before. There are also some wonderful photos of Harry and friends and early photos from his childhood. If you love Nilsson don't miss this book on a fantastic singer-songwriter and musical genius.

Astonishing on multiple levels.
By Offshore B
This book had me riveted from cover to cover.
A great story, expertly told with extensive supporting notes and bibliography.

For me, what takes this book strongly into the 5 star realm is the detailed accounts revealing how the music was made.
Best case, you own the 17 CD RCA Albums collections (I don't) , worst case you hear the music on youtube & your personal collection (I did)
As I read the stories describing how the various albums came together, and a detail was mentioned about a specific track, vocal, technique, or instrument. I put the book down, and listened to the track on my phone via youtube or itunes. Songs that I have heard many times before surprised me with new life as I listened with new intent.

Most notably, this technique of keeping the music at my fingertips paid off when the book lays praise on Nilsson's voice. Cue up the song in question and realize, wow, he really was as good as all the recent press keeps saying he is/was. ( Examples "Perfect Day" or "All I think About Is You" )

An emotional read, recommended for anyone with the slightest interest in music, or biographies. Essential read for even the most casual fan of Harry Nilsson.

Hooray for Harry
By Suzinne Barrett
Harry's voice was considered by many (including the author) to be the greatest male tenor in the the 70s. This biography starts off very strong, and that's not often the case with biographies, even the good ones. It really surprised me that Harry Nilsson's life actually began in Bushwick, Brooklyn. There, it was tough going for Harry and family. The father basically abandoned them, and one day Harry and his mother got attacked by a gang of girls near their home. After that, the mother picked up and split, but Harry decided to stick it out a bit in Brooklyn, and then eventually traveled to California to meet up with mum and siblings. Having no money, he hitchhiked cross country. It's during those hard scrabble early years that the book really takes flight. Living a hand to mouth existence for quite a while, the reader experiences the full arc of a life truly ranging from rags to riches (and rags again.) No joke, Harry Nilsson was one self made man. For sure, no silver spoon or even the most basic support was ever provided to him. He did have an uncle in California that gave him a job however.

Nilsson was blessed with a keen mind, and there he was at the forefront of the computer revolution. He worked his way to the top at a bank where he specialized in computer systems, even though he didn't even have a high school diploma. Was even known to wash the windows at his job. And for quite a while, Harry hung onto this very position even though his songwriting career was taking off. His character's kind of nebulous and hard to pin down though, making it rather difficult for any biographer. Harry Nilsson lived below the radar, and the author emphasizes that he never played before a live audience. That's an overstatement because he did play short set(s) before a small crowd of people, but surely he never went on any kind of tour. And that's the way he wanted it, and that restriction kept a certain pressure at bay. Harry controlled his career, not the music industry. The surprise here is all the songs that I was very familiar with from the 1970s that were indeed Harry Nilsson's. Here's a tasty sample: "Everybody's Talking" (from film "Midnight Cowboy"), "The Lime in the Coconut," "Without You" and "Jump into the Fire" (utilized to great affect in Scorcese's "Goodfellas").

The story loses some momentum half way through, and then, as one would expect, things pick way up when Nilsson connects with the Beatles. Notoriously, Nilsson clicked immediately with John Lennon and also enjoyed a long friendship with Ringo Starr as well. Nilsson and Lennon's exploits in California are legendary, and most would agree that was an out of control part of Lennon's life. Drinking, drugging, smoking and most likely fornicating. You get the picture. Additionally, Harry bought a flat in London where he lived on and off for several years. He would lend out his place to his famous friends when he wasn't in town. Both Mama Cass and Keith Moon in fact died in that very apartment. In this same regard, Nilsson died way too young also, having suffered a major heart attack at 53. This happened a mere six months after losing his life savings via money mismanagement by a trusted associate.

Definitely a well written book that shines a light on a writer/performer who is somewhat forgotten, but whose songbook certainly deserves a revival.

"It is a reference work clearly intended for school and college levels, but in its selection of entries and in the clear style of the entries, it does a good job in representing many of the key terms and ideas currently washing around in business and management culture and practice. A book such as this is like having a helpful expert at your elbow, one who has anticipated the kinds of queries you have when starting business and management studies." - Reference Reviews

In more than 100 A–Z entries, Maruca, a freelance business writer and editor, explores concepts, ideas, people, fads, themes, and issues that have become part of the business vernacular, shedding light on the dynamic ways in which business and society both influence and reflect each other. . . . Informative and entertaining, this set would be useful in helping business managers, frontline employees, students, and educators understand the workplace and the business world." - Booklist

One of the most captivating books ever written
By Sandy Starr
I first discovered Jack Black's `You Can't Win', as I suspect many readers did, when I found out that it was William S Burroughs' favourite book. Until I read it, though, I couldn't imagine just how big an influence it was on Burroughs - who drew upon its style, and the code of honour it describes, for the entirety of his writing career.
When you read Burroughs' foreword to this edition of `You Can't Win', it hits you that he didn't (as you might assume with a favourite book) reread the book regularly. Rather, he memorised the book as a boy, and then throughout his life `read' the version memorised in his own mind. Even the passages that Burroughs quotes in the foreword aren't word-for-word precise (I compared them with the text of the book proper), because they've been committed to myth and memory, and are recited in ritualistic fashion.
All of which aside, `You Can't Win' deserves to be known as more than just `the book that inspired Burroughs'. It's written in a plain, unsentimental style which has as much in common with the writing of Charles Bukowski as it does with the Beats - a style of writing which reached its apotheosis with `The Grass Arena', the harrowing autobiography of the British alcoholic vagrant John Healy. (Now, someone should teach a literature class comparing `You Can't Win' and `The Grass Arena' - THAT would be an inspiration.) What these writers have in common is that when you read them, you instantly think: `Now this is good, compelling, uncluttered prose.'
Many of those who have posted reviews below rightly praise Jack Black's memorable language and characterisation, which make `You Can't Win' into a kind of turn-of-the-century lexicon and encyclopaedia of the life of American thieves and hobos. But I was even more struck by Black's remarkable resolve, self-dependency and moral fortitude, and above all his categorical refusal to feel sorry for himself, or to let the reader feel sorry for him.
Three passages in the book in particular, all of which concern prison, are horrific - two passages in which Black is punished by flogging, and an absolutely unbearable passage in which he is tortured in a straitjacket by a sadistic prison warden. If these passages had been written by a lesser writer, I could not bear to read them. But Black takes the reader firmly by the hand, conveys what happened to him, and moves on.
Describing the first flogging: `It would not be fair to the reader for me to attempt a detailed description of this flogging.... If I could go away to some lonely, desolate spot and concentrate deeply enough I might manage to put myself in the flogging master's place and make a better job of reporting the matter. But that would entail a mental strain I hesitate to accept, and I doubt if the result would justify the effort.'
Describing the second flogging: `To make an unpleasant story short, I will say he beat me like a balky horse, and I took it like one - with my ears laid back and my teeth bared. All the philosophy and logic and clear reasoning I had got out of books and meditation in my two years were beaten out of me in 30 seconds, and I went out of that room foolishly hating everything a foot high.'
Describing being tortured in a straitjacket: `Every hour Cochrane came in and asked if I was ready to give up the hop. When I denied having it, he tightened me up some more and went away. The torture became maddening. Some time during the second day I rolled over to the wall and beat my forehead against it trying to knock myself out. Cochrane came in, saw what I was doing, and dragged me back to the middle of the cell. I hadn't strength enough left to roll back to the wall, so I stayed there and suffered.'
Black opens the book with a description of his own face, and fittingly enough, there is a photograph of him near the front of the book. Many times while reading `You Can't Win', I found myself flicking back to look at that careworn, yet amiable face, and picturing Black's exploits in my mind. The afterword to this edition, which outlines Black's life after the book was published, is equally fascinating - I was moved almost to tears to read that he simply vanished in 1932, and was strongly suspected of having tied weights to his feet and thrown himself into New York Harbour.
Of course, `You Can't Win' is a unique and priceless document of a bygone American era. But lest you find yourself feeling nostalgic for this way of life - as readers are prone to feel, whenever they read vivid descriptions of times before they were born, and as William S Burroughs is certainly guilty of feeling in his foreword - Black cautions us against precisely this kind of nostalgia (and ironically, uses an irresistibly romantic description of the past to do so):
`I'm not finding fault with these brave days of jungle music, synthetic liquor, and dimple-kneed maids, and anybody that thinks the world is going to the bowwows because of them ought to think back to San Francisco or any big city of 20 years ago - when train conductors steered suckers against the bunko men; when coppers located "work" for burglars and stalled them while they worked; when pickpockets paid the police so much a day for "exclusive privileges" and had to put a substitute "mob" in their district if they wanted to go out of town to a country fair for a week. Those were the days when there were saloons by the thousand; when the saloonkeeper ordered the police to pinch the Salvation Army for disturbing the peace by singing hymns in the street; when there were race tracks, gambling unrestricted, crooked prize fights; when there were cribs by the mile and hop joints by the score. These things may exist now, but if they do, I don't know where. I knew where they were then, and with plenty of money and leisure I did them all.'

BEWARE: DON'T BUY THE INCOMPLETE PIRATED VERSION OF THIS BOOK BY BNPUBLISHING.
By Brunotherueful
This edition of You Can't Win is the edition I did in 2001 for NABAT Books/AK Press and STILL IN PRINT. Bnpublishing ripped out the introduction by William Burroughs, the article from Harper's Magazine that Jack Black wrote about crime and prisons that I added, and my afterword, and republished it as their book. They didn't change the layout, typeface or anything else so for example their version starts with page 15. Don't buy this ripped off version !! Buy the complete and much more attractive version by NABAT/AK Press !! Oh yeah. It truly is a splendid book, kind of a bible of alienated outsiderdom. (I posted this review at the bnpublishing version of You Can't Win. I see it can now be found at the Nabat/AK Press version too. That's the version you should get: You Can't Win

Underworld figure talks up prison reform
By Jay Stevens
"You Can't Win," is an entertaining romp through the underworld of the American West at the beginning of the twentieth century, although the book masquerades as an anti-crime and prison reform tract. Sparsely written, yet thoroughly picturesque and descriptive, "You Can't Win" was written by Jack Black, burglar, safecracker, stick-up man, and penitentiary kingpin gone good. Traveling through a world of saloons, mining camps, and raucous western cities like San Francisco and Seattle, Black brings to vivid life a world of the 1900s we rarely see in textbooks.
In the end, Black urges us to stick to the straight and narrow, rues the path that brought him to morphine and state penitentiaries. Indeed, throughout the narrative, Black sprinkles cautionary paragraphs intended to discourage would-be imitators. But there's such a streak of enthusiasm and nostalgia running through Black's book that it's hard to believe that he regrets most of what he did. The stuff that he REALLY regrets seems to be what's left out - and there's a lot left out. That period he "terrorized" San Francisco - according to the afterword - his shooting of an unarmed man, the drug business he subsequently set up in prison.
Black's world is extremely moral, if not above the law. There's a strong sense of loyalty running through the book, and an ethical hierarchy, at the bottom of which lie "stool pigeons" and "double crossers," and at the top are the reliable men who keep their word and pay their debts. Those who make the cut, who play by the unwritten rules of lawbreaking and loyalty are the "Johnsons," the family of thieves.
No wonder those literary poseurs, the Beats, glommed onto this book as an instructional how-to, not as a cautionary tale of morality. The Beats were attracted to the underworldly anti-establishment characters, the bums, the hobos, and the fences. In the introduction to "You Can't Win," William S. Burroughs takes Black's message further by adding a second category in opposition to the "Johnsons," the "poops." (Using a different word, of course, which won't pass Amazon's censorship.) Either you're a "Johnson" or you're a "poop," Burroughs says, and with a swooping unJohsonlike gesture indicts everybody who prefers work to thievery.
Black himself would reject the notion of casting most of us into "poopdom." He had great respect for honest people, even those that he robbed. Sure they might be a bit slow, but they often plied a trade, bothered no one, and lived fulfilled. He blamed his own inability to keep straight on some mysterious internal defect, refusing to praise or justify his violent past.. Burroughs, of course, born into a life of priviledge and wealth, and who chose to squander his advantages on drugs and self-entertainment, prefers to justify his own excesses (including the shooting death of his wife) and grab onto the title of "Johnson," as if it were a badge of honor.
But putting my attacks on the Beats aside, the importance of this book lies in its examination of criminality. What makes a criminal? How can we keep young people from growing up into a life of crime? Although Black provides us with few answers, he gives us the example of his own life. He claims that his experiences in prison made him more of a criminal, and that the aggressive response of law enforcement officials to his deeds pushed him further into crime. It was the prison strait-jacket treatment that turned him bad, that put him behind a gun, that made him dangerous. And it was a judge's act of kindness that convinced him to reform. In order to cut down on vicous criminals, Black suggests more leniency on first-time offenders, more job opportunities and support for ex-cons, and an end to the death penalty and other cruel punishements.
After meeting a man who's been there, who walked on the other side of law and order, after getting to know, respect, and like the man, it's hard to argue with that conclusion. Those behind bars are people, not animals, machines, or rocks. And let's face it, in recent years our prison and police system has only created more criminals, not to mention caused the deaths of hundreds of men and women.

Rules for the Global Economy, by Horst Siebert

Rules for the Global Economy is a timely examination of the conditions under which international rules of globalization come into existence, enabling world economic and financial systems to function and stabilize. Horst Siebert, a leading figure in international economics, explains that these institutional arrangements, such as the ones that govern banking, emerge when countries fail to solve economic problems on their own and cede part of their sovereignty to an international order. Siebert demonstrates that the rules result from a trial-and-error process--and usually after a crisis--in order to prevent pointless transaction costs and risks.

Using an accessible and nonmathematical approach, Siebert links the rules to four areas: international trade relations, factor movements, financial flows, and the environment. He looks at the international division of labor in the trade of goods and services; flow of capital; diffusion of technology; migration of people, including labor and human capital; protection of the global environment; and stability of the monetary-financial system. He discusses the role of ethical norms and human rights in defining international regulations, and argues that the benefits of any rules system should be direct and visible. Comprehensively supporting rules-based interactions among international players, the book considers future issues of the global rules system.

Review
"A useful contribution to the international economics literature."--Choice

From the Back Cover

"Interactions among countries are mediated by rules. Examples include the rules for trade, the flow of finance, financial stability, the environment, and human rights. Siebert's new book not only explains what these regulations are, but why they exist and, more importantly, why they change over time. The perspective taken by the book is as simple as it is powerful: rules evolve to reduce transactions costs. Siebert has written an intellectually exciting and wise book--a guide for devising the rules needed to address many of today's great challenges."--Scott Barrett, Columbia University

"This brilliant exposition by a leading economist explains why globalization requires global rules. The author's argument is based on the German school of liberalism that emphasizes the need for the state to provide standards for the proper working of a market economy."--André Sapir, Université Libre de Bruxelles

"Officials who are tasked with translating the G-20 aspirations into new rules will greatly benefit from Siebert's sound analysis. The rest of us can use Siebert as a guide to distinguish between rules that genuinely answer the needs of our new era and fluffy wisps in the sky."--from the foreword by Gary Hufbauer, Peterson Institute for International Economics

"This is an iconoclastic and interesting work. Arguing that a rules-based interaction among global players is critical for achieving the gains promised by globalization, Siebert applies this notion to each of the major areas of the international system. The book's arguments are consistent and relevant for policy, especially with respect to trade and the environment."--Ingo Walter, New York University

About the Author
Horst Siebert (1938-2009) was the Heinz Nixdorf Professor in European Integration and Economic Policy at Johns Hopkins University's SAIS Bologna Center in Italy. His books include "The World Economy, Economics of the Environment," and "The German Economy" (Princeton).

The Autobiography and Other Writings, by Benjamin Franklin

One of America's most famous patriots, Benjamin Franklin was more than just a founding father of the country. He was a prolific writer, tradesman, scientist, and philosopher who had major influences in France, England, and America. Franklin made it clear through his works that he believed in both spirituality and science at the same time, and he wrote about how the two ideas can converge. He was quite famous during his life, but his fame lives on through his writings and discoveries. In the collection "The Autobiography and Other Writings," audiences can read about Franklin's life from his personal perspective. "The Autobiography" was important in that it was one of the first pieces of American literature that was praised in England. Franklin was very truthful in his tone and the depiction of his life; he wanted others to see his mistakes and learn from them. Also included in the collections are various prose, satire, speeches, and letters from his daily correspondence.

The Original American Dream
By T. Simons
It's a little presumptuous to write a "review" of a book as historically important as this, so I'll just give a few reasons why you should read it.

It's well-written and engaging, even 200+ (nearing 300+; Franklin was born in 1706) years later. It stops in 1760, well before his involvement with the Revolution, but it covers in detail his youth, apprenticeships, the formation of his philosophy and ideals, and his path from poor roots to business and social success -- the first telling of the American Dream, the idea that a poor young man could Find His Fortune in the New World through enterprise, wisdom, and work.

There is a high degree of self-hagiography here, and it would be amusing to tally up (for example) how many times Franklin praises himself vs. how many times he advises on the virtue of humility. He smooths over controversial topics like his illegitimate son, he doesn't mention his membership in the Freemasons, etc. The construction is also a bit rambling ("Then I did this thing. Next, I did another thing. Then I did a third thing"), but Franklin simply did so many interesting things -- even in this short slice of his life -- that the book is interesting despite that. There's a great deal of discussion on his scientific and inventive accomplishments, and he talks at length about his development of his own personal moral code and how he achieved business success (along with Franklin's Personal Method You Can Use for Self-Improvement -- in some ways, this is the first self-help book!)

All in all, this is very much worth reading, and gives a compelling picture of Franklin's life and times. I particularly liked the picture Franklin draws of contemporary American society -- free, open, and small, with most people in most towns all knowing each other, and business opportunities are wide open for anyone with industry and pluck. I'm not sure how similar modern-day America still is to Franklin's Philadelphia, but it's certain that Franklin -- and this book -- helped set the image that we still *want* to believe America conforms to. And for that alone, it's worth reading.

If you like this book, you might also be interested in reading Alexis de Tocqueville's _Democracy in America_, for another view of colonial-era America, or any of Mark Twain's nonfiction (_Life on the Mississippi_, _Roughing It_, etc.), for similar accounts of America's growth and development a hundred-odd years further on. Any of those should be available as a free Kindle download.

Enlightening and Written in the Style of the Times
By P. J.
This "Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin" does not contain the type of finished material one has come to expect in a finished coherent autobiographical writing covering the whole life span of the individual written by single author over a continuous period of time. This is really source material partially written over distinctly separate periods of time wherein the author, Benjamin Franklin, wrote on two different continents without access to the other parts of his text. With that said, I still think that this book is a wonderful and enlightening piece of work. It should, in my opinion, be considered for placement in every high school and college library, and it should perhaps be wise to consider it for required reading in those institutions. The book tells of the life and times in which Mr. Franklin lived, the attitudes of the colonists and of the British and the ways that things were accomplished in colonial America. It is truly amazing to me to hear first hand how a single individual with only two years of formal education can educate himself as this man did and to rise to make such truly great contributions to society, science, engineering, and politics. I highly recommend this book.

An Unfinished Autobiography of the Consumate American Life
By john purcell
Franklin wrote this autobiography as a letter of instruction in the ways of the world to his youthful and illegitimate son of 40. It only covers the first half or so of his incredible life, so the things that really made him well-known are not covered, but there is plenty here anyway.
Franklin recounts his family's modest life in England and the circumstances that brought them to Boston. He was among the youngest of a very large family, ultimately finding his way to Philadelphia to find work as a printer when an apprenticeship with an older brother turned sour.
We always think of Franklin as being a slightly older statesman among the Founding Fathers, when in fact he was a full generation older than Washington or Jefferson. Unlike popular perception, he was an athletic and vibrant youth, who rescued a drowning Dutch companion and taught swimming to children of London's elite.
Philadelphia in the 1720's and 1730's was a small town, never sure if it would really take off as a settlement. Franklin quickly befriended key politicians who felt Philadelphia had grown sufficiently to have a world-class print shop. He played a key role in the town's development, leading civic groups in establishing libraries, fire companies, meeting halls, and street cleaning services. Of course, he was also the consummate politician, serving in office, and networking his way to his first fortune by publishing government documents and printing the first paper currency. He also had a knack for working with the several important religious sects of that time and place, especially the pacifist Quakers, even though Franklin was a deist.
Franklin was a clever businessman. In today's lexicon, he effectively franchised across the colonies his concept of the publisher/printer who would provide both the content and the ink on paper. By age 30, he had set up his business affairs so that his printing businesses in several colonies were operated by partners and he received a share of the profits, allowing him to pursue other interests.
The autobiography is unfinished, so we don't hear his account of his pursuits of electricity, which made him as famous and well-known as Bill Gates is today, nor his thought on the Revolution. Franklin did play a key role in establishing logistical support to the British during their fight with the French in the New World. At that time and during his years in Europe, he was generally perceived as a Tory supporter.
Read this book to learn how Franklin devoted himself to self-improvement by establishing clubs, lending libraries, a sober lifestyle allowing time for study, and his methods for measuring his personal performance against metrics he had established for a proper lifestyle. One will also gather a new appreciation for the fullness, utility, and richness of the English language when put on paper by a master.
