Enjoyed reading MISSING. The author's ability to combine life lessons along with a bit of humor was exceptionally done. Characterizations were strong and believeable. I found Calvin, the main character, very likeable and as with any good book, the storytelling was excellent.

Humor and wisdom. A MUST read!

"Missing" is a humorous book. Calvin, 10 years old, finds himself questioning himself and all that life holds. He and his family set out on an adventure across the country. In a van, they travel and meet a wide variety of people. He learns how some people don't mind his color and others do, as if he's something less than human. Getting to the point where "even a bird doesn't complain about the colors of its feathers", he goes through his days wondering how to save a missing girl. He didn't know the girl. Never met her. He just knew she was in trouble and needed help.
Reading a book where a 10 year old cares about others in such a deep way, has such a sense of humor and knows so much about life is a treat. Lessons learned from a 10 year old boy. How many times did you say something to your parents when you were 10 that they ignored? Standing up and speaking for himself and saving a life made it easier for him to be heard.
This book is wonderful for teaching self acceptance, appreciation of faith and family, and learning how to laugh no matter how hard things may be. See how all people are truly the same, no matter what race or religion. Everyone puts their pants on one leg at a time. Everyone deserves respect and appreciation.
Calvin, you are amazing! You made me laugh! I was so proud of you when you stood at the podium when the lost girl was returned to her parents.

Kevin Porter Finds His Literary Voice with MISSING

Some times it takes an external event for us to look within ourselves at the person that we are and the person we would like to be. In his book MISSING author Kevin Porter gives us two examples of what it means to be lost and the joy that can come from being found.
First we are introduced to Calvin Crane. He's a ten-year-old who is not just trying to make sense of the world but also discover who he is in the process. His personal journey involves a literal one with his family and that is when he is reminded of a young girl that is also lost as well. Through Calvin we are not only able to get an idea of what it's like to go "missing" but how it feels to be incomplete as well. Even at his age Calvin is aware of what might be "out there" in the world, and through his decisions we are given a glimpse into not just how quickly danger can find us but what it feels like to live life free.
I enjoyed MISSING for several reasons. One, of course, was the main character and how "aware" he was. We are able to see slivers of ourselves in his approach to life and even in the decisions that he makes. There are also some great lessons we can take away from Calvin, one of which is the importance of listening and heeding the counsel we are given in life as it might save us in more ways than one.
A truly entertaining read, author Kevin Porter has definitely found his literary voice with MISSING.
