Doch letztendlich war auch seinen Unternehmungen kein politischer Erfolg vergönnt, denn der in religiösen Fragen tolerante Großkhan lässt sich nicht zur Unterstützung der Christen im Kampf gegen den Islam bewegen. In den Augen der Nachwelt kommt der Reise des Franziskanermönchs hingegen ein bedeutender kulturgeschichtlicher Stellenwert zu: Rubruk berichtet einfühlsam und detailliert über das Recht, die Sitten und die Kultur der uns bis dato so fremden asiatischen Reitervölker. Sein Reisejournal ist der erste zuverlässige Bericht eines Europäers, direkt aus dem Herzen des mongolischen Großreichs.
